Room for another newbie?

Hello Everyone!

I'm just another newbie who has crept in for some empathy and sharing experiences.

Not much to tell; I'm just clinging to my 20's and have lived with depression more than half my life. I've been on medication for the most part, other than a brief period where I set up camp in denial and tried that instead.

I've been struggling with anxiety and panic for a while. I am giving CBT/therapy a go with a psychologist for the first time so I'll be haunting those forums for advice.

So I just wanted to say hi and hopefully I'll see you all around. 🙂

hello Lytaz, it's great to have you on board.
Being in denial doesn't help although you may not know that this is happening, but when you refuse to get any help or take any medication only because you believe there is nothing wrong with you, that means being in denial.
It only prolongs your illness before you realise that you can't help yourself and need help, that's when your recovery has a chance to begin.
Casn I just mention that your medication needs to be reviewed, especially if you aren't feeling any better, but hope that CBT will start thehelp you need, and look forward to seeing you on the forums. Geoff.

Hi Lytaz,

Welcome to the community here. I go by Dools, Mrs. D or Doolhof. There is always room for someone new here, after all we were all new here ourselves once upon a time!

Sorry to read you have been struggling with depression for so long, I know how much that sucks big time!

All the best with the CBT, hope it goes well for you. I have always found the more effort I put into things, the better the outcome.

Not sure if you have had the time to check out this forum yet, there are certainly a variety of sections and areas for you to become involved in if you so desire. There is the light hearted section in the social zone.

You might like to visit one of the virtual cafes or join in with the "Three things to be thankful" thread.

Do you have hobbies and interests you would like to share with us? I enjoy all kinds of crafts, have joined the local volunteer fire service and find peace out in the garden.

Hope you feel welcomed here!

Cheers for now from Mrs. D.

Hi Lytaz,

Welcome to the forums!

Of course there's room for another newbie - luckily BeyondBlue has good IT people so everyone is welcome here.

I'm happy to hear that you've decided to see a psychologist for the first time! I hope that it goes well and feel free to keep posting on the thread to let us know how it goes.

Hi Lytaz,

Welcome to the forums, the more the merrier I think.

Geoff makes a good point about your meds... Have you had them reviewed lately?

Hope the CBT helps and that you feel comfortable with your psychologist.

Your comments and advice and questions are appreciated wherever you feel comfortable sharing. 😊

Hi Lytaz,

Love the picture. I'm not good with dog breeds, so what kind of dog is that? Is it your dog?

Some evenings I go walking with the neighbours and their dogs. The ladies don't seem to like walking in the cold or the drizzle so we have not been for a few nights now. I enjoy the antics of the dogs, they make me laugh.

There is a small hill returning home, I like walking the German Shepherd so he can pull me back up the hill at the end of the walk.

Would you like to share a little about what you enjoy in life, your hobbies and interests? I know it is difficult to get into things when you are feeling depressed. I do find once I have pushed myself, I then have a sense of pleasure and achievement.

Hope you are doing okay or at least reasonably well. We all have yuck days, we get that!

Cheers for now from Mrs. D.

Hi Geoff,

Thanks for the advice!

I'm definitely aware of my propensity to deny my symptoms try to seek help as soon as I can these days. In my old days I would procrastinate in fear and resentment of having to deal with the illness which as you said just delays recovery.

Concerning medication, my psychiatrist and I both believe my GAD is linked to my ability to process stress. I used to use stress to power through everything difficult until I basically burnt myself out - now if I try to tap into it I get anxiety symptoms instead. So my psych thinks CBT or similar therapy will help me understand and control my triggers better than increasing medication at this point.

Thanks for the welcome! I look forward to having more discussions with you.

Hi Mrs D!

Thanks for telling me about the different forums, I'll definitely check those out.

As for hobbies I really enjoy gardening, though I'm terrible with plant names I'm like the hairy one, the pink one, etc. I also love hanging out with the gang at the dog park where there's always a guarantee of being smothered by dog kisses.

What kind of things do you enjoy doing when the blues get you down?

I love German Shepherds, they're so goofy yet majestic at the same time!

My avatar is of my dog, yes! He's a greyhound x staffy type mixalot. His nickname is marshmallow because he loves cuddles.

Thank you for the warm welcome!

Hi Lytaz

What a great post and welcome to the BB Forums 🙂

I used to have chronic anxiety for over 10 years and I used denial and tried all the natural remedies but the doc & the super frequent therapy & meds helped so well.

Anyhoo....Great to have you as part of the Forums Family 🙂

Any questions about anything just hollar!

my kindest

Paul

Hi Lytaz,

Hope you are settling in and finding your way around the forum. I won't be able to help you with any technical details, as I am not too good at that! Ha. Ha.

When I feel myself starting to sink into the blues, I try to distract myself. It doesn't always work but is certainly worth a try. If it is not bucketing down with rain I will go out into the garden.

I am a bit like you with plant names. I told a friend I had just bought a new plant at the garden nursery. She asked me what it was. I told her it had green leaves and would have yellow flowers in spring. We both cracked up laughing.

Inside distractions for me may be reading, doing some craft in front of the T.V. a Sudoku puzzle, writing down how I am feeling so I better understand if anything is bothering me, drawing, painting (both of which are rather random) or playing card games on the computer if my husband is not glued to it.

Some days it is all too much and I go to bed for a while, then try to encourage myself to find something to do that will give me a sense of achievement, even if it is just sweeping the floor or cleaning out a drawer in the kitchen.

Your dog is very cute. We have a fat cat and 3 goldfish in a pond outside.

Hope your day goes okay for you.

Cheers, from Mrs. D.
