Dear Need hope,

We are pleased you found the courage to post about your struggles in our forums. We are a helpful community of people who have been through many different situations, including addiction.

Addiction can be very difficult to overcome, as you express so well here. However, people can and do work through it. Unfortunately, we understand that the norm is to work through it multiple times. One thing we heard recently is, if you make it much more difficult to practice the addiction, whilst making it much easier to do something you would like to do rather than the addiction, this may help with encouraging yourself to start changing the undesirable habbit.

We would encourage you to talk to your GP about setting up a mental health plan so you can work with a psychologist who specialises in addictions.

We would also like to encourage you to call the BeyondBlue Support Service on 1300 22 4636, and talk confidentially with one of the mental health specialists whenever you are feeling overwhelmed by the siren song of the addiction. You may also try calling Lifeline on 13 1114.

Please remember that we are always here for you.

Warm regards,

Sophie M.

Hello Need hope, hi and welcome.

I can say to you to stop the drinking as well as the gambling, but unfortunately, it won't mean much, as it didn't with me when I was drinking, I had to make up my own mind whether I stopped or continued on, but when I was ready I could stop and haven't had a drink for nearly 3 years.

Enough of me, this is your thread and I do understand the hold it has on you, but know that people like you really want to stop but are unable to because the power of these addictions.

If I can say that your doctor can prescribe some medication that will stop the 'want to drink', it takes away that urge you have when drinking and if you decide to drink while taking this med, you won't feel the buzz you normally do when not taking any medication.

It will only work if you seriously want to stop, but you need to change your routine to replace what you would normally do, and you can do this, as I found out, by drinking a large glass of fizzy drink, the entire amount and then have something to eat, do this if for some reason you do get the urge to drink, but this shouldn't happen.

There are places for you to visit, like AA, but I didn't find them helpful because the same people stood up and said exactly what they said last time, although this may benefit you.

I can't name the medication but if you search the net it will come up or if you visit your doctor they will know.

Please let me know how you are feeling, as I want to help you.

Geoff.

Hi Need hope,

Wellcome to our forums.

I'm sorry you are going through addiction I understand this is hard to deal with.

Have you ever tried any type of rehab?

If you are interested you could google Kyle Quilly Quilsauing he had a different addiction to you but he has now overcome it, he may be able to provide some inspiration for you.

Hi there,

I am sorry you are going through this. There is a reason why addiction is classified as a mental health condition, and an illness. There are going to be periods of relapse on your journey, and everyone is individual.

Are you seeking help/rehab for this? It could beneficial for you.

I hope things improve,

jaz xx

Thanks for the kind messages.

i have an appointment with gp today at 11 i am in a viscous cycle i need to get out of. I cant sleep unless i have been drinking. I have been to a 28 day rehab program but i relapsed after 3 or 4 months.

The hateness of myself is endless through years of ruining everything good in my life.

I have avoided medication all my life but is a tablet going to make a difference?

I am seperated because i ruined that relationship but i have a 4yo daughter who loves me unconditionally i need to sort myself out quickly for her.

Hi Need hope,

I'm so sorry for your challenge.

Maybe you can try something different. There're organisations providing mental health recovery programs, they're community-based, with professionals and volunteers with lived experience who can really understand you and help you.

Have a look at Mind Australia and GROW:

Hope everything will be better.
