Hello new and nervous

Mjr

Hi all

Here it goes:

I am 33 years old with a 9year old daughter and 3 step children. I'm from Adelaide and I suffer depression. I'm unsure of how long for but the last 3 years have been the toughest. I have been in and out of hospital but seem to be not getting anywhere.

I have joined hoping to find some light and some understanding I guess. My friends and family don't understand so it's a topic that is never discussed.

I hide behind a happy face/life. Which is far from the truth. And also having a big busy family I just don't have the time to deal with anything- I don't get 5mins to myself. So really hoping to turn my life around.

So hello from one negative nancy!!!

Hi Mjr.  Welcome to the forums.  Depression is one of the hardest topics to understand because the sufferer often has to hide behind a 'face'.  You are quite safe here as most of the people answering your posts (including myself) have suffered depression in all of it's 'glory'.  Your family/friends won't understand unless they have suffered too.  It's a debilitating illness because you can't see it.  It's to your credit you can put on a happy face.  I find in my dark days, I get quite irritable because I'm told to 'snap out of it'.  The more hurt I get, the more irritated I get with me because I feel depression is ruling me.  What do you do to help you feel better inside?  I sometimes read a book or do crosswords.  If I have to concentrate on anything too deep, I get more down because I can't concentrate that much.  Answering some of the forums might get too much, if you feel you can't, don't take it personally.  If the forum is too close to how you're feeling, it's okay to acknowledge that.  there are others who can answer when you can't.  Everybody here helps everybody, that's the beauty of these forums, you're never alone.

Again - welcome.

Hey Mjr and Welcome

Paul here (again) 🙂 I just noticed the help you gave to another sufferer on another post...Great Input Mjr

I was just about to sign off now at 1:50am Saturday when I viewed your post. Like Pipsy I have had depression as well...it is a dreadful health problem especially with the symptoms it brings to the table..

The good news is the depression will reduce in severity....over time..

If I may ask you...do you have a GP or Doc that you can talk to?

Family & Friends....that can be an issue...they rarely understand...(same here)

Anyway..I just wanted to say thankyou for the help you provided to another sufferer...You are strong Mjr

Thankyou for having the courage to post

I hope your weekend is good to you Mjr

Kind Thoughts

Paul

dear Mjr, welcome aboard and nice to be able to speak with you.

It's a shame that people don't want to talk about depression, because it's such a huge issue in this day and age, and should never be pushed under the carpet where anybody is prone and can never be avoided.
I see your last comment is one which a depressed person says, but it's one which no one can ever avoid, because with depression we all make negative statements as well having negative thoughts, but that's depression does to us.
All of us hide behind our false face, but eventually it becomes too exhausting and don't have the ability to keep it up, as people keep on asking you with a smiling face if you want to do something, but when you keep saying no, then they begin to wonder whether you are happy or whether you are just putting it on.
Could you click onto 'Get Support' at the top of the page and scroll down to 'Information Resources' and order all the 'printed material' from BB, it's all free, but you would find it to be useful, just as anyone else in your family who maybe interested.
I often suggest this to people because the more knowledge you can gain about depression could open up your mind on what should then happen.
I hope that you can get back to us. Geoff.
