The dsp and weight loss on meds

Arthouse_Ragdoll

I have a couple of questions I was wondering if anyone could help me with. The first is regarding getting on the DSP. Now I have schizoaffective disorder and anxiety. I'm 27 years old and I've had this for 2 years now almost. I've been trying to get on the dsp to no avail. Has anyone had any positive experiences or success with this?

The other thing is since I went on my anti depressants and my anti psychotic I have gained a whopping 45kg. I'm trying to lose weight now I'm almost 100kg. Does anyone have any tips or can tell me what to expect/success stories about losing weight while on meds? Keep in mind I have depressive schizoaffective disorder and with my anxiety going outside and exercising is often totally beyond the relms of my ability.

Thanks 🙂

Hi Arthous and welcome to the BB forums

Unfortunately some medications can cause weight gain. It can be frustrating. But when dr choose medication they choose one that will help your condition, take in your history and weigh up the benefits vs side affects.

Have you ever seen a dietitian before? They work with people to help them optimise their nutrition and help with weight loss. They are accredited by a governing body and have had to complete 4-5 years of uni with professional placement. They also work in hospitals as well. I suggest seeing them over a nutritionist (or see a nutritionist who is also a registered/accredited dietitian). If you talk about this with your GP they can complete a GP management plan (also known as an EPC) and refer you to a dietitian. This way it is subserdised by medicare (without this completed by a GP you'll have to pay for it all)

I thought I should also link you to a really good website. It is a government website and approved by dietitians. They have some good nutrition advice and some helpful healthy tips for weight loss. Try stay away from quick fix diets that are not nutritionally adequate

Hope this helps

Hi AR, welcome

A usual MsPurple has good advise.

There are so many diets and my problem is that my motivation ebbs and flows.

So if I lose enthusiasm I no longer worry about it. I just wait till I'm eager again.

The diet that works for me if

-no spuds, excess sugar, butter, bread. I have rice but it must be cooked with a tablespoon if coconut oil then refrigerated for minimum 12 hours. That process halves the calories! ! You can google that.

Here are a few threads that might help you

The dsp. Its difficult to get it now. You need to go through the processes. Your GP has to tick the box -disabled for 24 months or more. Thats only the first leg. Eventually centrelink endorsed dictor/specialists do their bit then an interview with a workplace assessor to ascertain your capacity to work. Then 3 months wait for the result.

I hope that helps.
