Hey DL!

Thanks for your post.

Just want to clarify, did you been body image issues such as body dysmorphia/eating disorders etc?
I have not found psychiatrists very helpful with this in general. In terms of personality disorders although I don't have that diagnosis, I did see a psychiatrist briefly who specialises in borderline personality disorder, and he had a lot of insight in general and was very progressive.

I have found unfortunately that for eating disorders and body image that psychiatrists have been pretty not progressive or insightful, and really wasted my time with their treatments. I found it hard to find a good psychiatrist when I needed treatment for niche issues such as body image and spent a lot of time hunting for someone good. I'm sure there are good ones but there are definitely many that don't have adequete understanding of some of these issues.

Sorry I can't answer more about personality disorders but hopefully someone else here could chime in regarding their experience with personality disorders treatment.

Hi

its not eating disorder but more along the lines of:

- not happy with me and my body

- always trying to fit in and be like others when I should be happy with who I am

with the personality disorder that scares the crap out of me and whilst I want to further look into this and get the help I need I want to make sure I go to someone who is highly qualified.

hi DL,

thanks for the clarification

I can understand a lot about body issues and image issues related to how i look.
I'm sorry you have to experience that too, I hope you can find some support here.

I understand also the desire to find someone specialised in personality disorders. I don't know how to give advice on that particular search but I do relate very much to having to try really hard to find support for body image issues. I have seen a psychiatrist and a psychologist for this, and sometimes call the Butterfly Foundation as well. I'm sorry it feels overwhelming - it really is hard sometimes to navigate the system. Just letting you know I'm here for you if you want to talk more.

Hi Dejected Liar,

I can see you've gotten some great advice already from the community and yes - psychiatrists can be helpful for all of these things. I totally get wanting to see someone who is qualified, or at least has a good background knowledge in personality disorders.

Here is a website you can go to and filter by interest - psychiatrists who are on this platform can specify if these are issues that they work with.

On your first appointment you can also ask lots of questions (if you want to!) about their experience and how many people they might have worked with.

Best of luck and I hope you find a good one -
