High Blood Pressure

Hi, I know we are not to refer to specific medications on here and I will not use the names. I have been struggling with high blood pressure (HBP), oh and I am 27 years old by the way. I have been getting high readings at home and at the doctors office for the last year or so. I am on an antidepressant which can cause HBP and am on the combined contraceptive pill which can also cause HBP, the problem is that I know that if I have to go off either of these medications my mental health will get worse because both of them help me manage. The other thing is that my HBP is variant, it is normal when I am resting or on the weekend, but high during a normal work day. I cannot quit by job simply because I have HBP and I doubt it would make any difference which job I have, it would still be high. Even if I just move around it can get higher again. So really, do I even have HBP if it is normal when I am resting?

Hi JellyBean100, welcome.

I would suggest seeking medical advice, because we're not professionals here.

Dear JellyBean100,

It sounds like you have a few interdependent issues here, with regards to the antidepressent, contraceptive pill, and high blood pressure which may or may not be a result of your medications. It's unwise to speculate on the state of your health because of the possibility that this is related to your medications, so please visit your GP and get their advice.

Kindly,
M

Hello JellyBean100 and thanks for your post. I agree with the others on this thread about the need to speak with your GP about the different medications you are taking and the possible affects they may be having on your blood pressure. They will be the best person to talk to as there may be alternative medications or dosages to trial. Stress as you mentioned, diet & exercise can all affect your blood pressure too. Perhaps it is worth looking at different stress reduction techniques such as meditation, aromatherapy or even reading a good book. Talking to a mental health professional may also be beneficial in learning strategies to help with the stress from work.

I had high BP in my early 20s and most of it was related to not dealing well with stress and consuming too much salt in my diet. I had to make changes to my diet, do more cardio exercise and learned breathing exercises for my stress. It is different for everyone. Good luck in sorting everything out.
