Hey all,
I've had a bit of bad luck with talking to psychs and counsellors recently. I have had a tough time recently and I'm working through it but I have been, I guess you would say 'rebuffed' by a few professionals. Each time they seem to minimise my problems ("you seem stressed, but you can just do /this/ to improve it" or "are you friends at university also feeling like this? It's a stressful time for everyone"). It has gotten pretty disheartening to not have anyone properly listen to my problems and concerns for my own wellbeing.
I was hoping for some advice from others in therapy as to how to properly communicate my problems. I do understand that I am the common denominator and there's a chance I haven't been expressing myself properly. So, I guess, how do you guys make sure your psych/counsellor understands when a problem is important? Any advice would be helpful.

I think a number of possibilities are there as to why you cant highlight your problems to a pro medical person.
- He/she might not "connect" with you
- You might not be highlighting your priority problem clearly enough.
- They could be sticking to the "book" in terms of treatment procedures meaning your priority problem could be fixed during the treatment long term
- When you highlight the problem they don't believe it is as important
In my case years ago I decided to keep going trying new ones until that connection was made. I also sought different styles of treatment including videos, motivational lectures, reading, talking to others with similar issues. At the same time I allowed medication to settle down with only fine tweeking.
In the early days I was misdiagnosed so for 6 years I took meds for ADHD all the while I actually had bipolar. So while I respect professional medical staff it is important to keep their human fault levels into perspective.
So with bipolar for example I researched mood swings, depression, triggers, etc and with Dysthymia I researched sadness, sensitivity and melancholy.
This narrowed my focus and now I have good insight to my issues and can help others like at this forum.
Being open minded led me to finding relaxation and peace.

So feel free to add this site into the mix of recovery. Our search engine at the top has a huge data base. Also you can expand on your issues here on this thread or start another with an appropriate heading.
So yes, professional therapists and the like have my highest respect but that doesn't mean I connect with them. You are the patient, what matters to you is the actual priority as are your issues, not what the pro believes it is. Not happy- move on and keep going until you find satisfaction.
