My Dad has just retired from work. He is 60 year of age. He is always low and doesnt want to do anything interesting or travel anywhere. He is most likely depressed. We are from India. He wouldnt visit a doctor about this. How can we help him without him visiting a doctor?

 Thanks

Hi Ddeks,

Welcome to the forum, and good on you for reaching out on behalf of your dad. Depression is not uncommon in older people, particularly when retiring from work. We have recently developed a resource called Connections Matter which I'd recommend you have a look through and consider getting your dad to read - it has a lot of practical tips, including a questionnaire which will help your dad identify for himself how he is feeling.

On the doctor or psychologist front, is there any possibility he might feel more comfortable talking to an Indian practitioner? You can try using our practitioner directory here, in the 'Advanced search' tab there is a box you can tick under 'Client type', 'Multicultural people'. Depending on where you live, and who has chosen to list themselves, you should be able to find practitioners that speak languages other than English.

Hope this helps!
