Who else likes gardening?

Hi everyone

I hope you're staying well today.

Who else likes gardening? I would love to connect with people here who are happy to share their gardening adventures.

For me I know that gardening helped heal my soul during tough times. I hope it will again.
Then with other things going on, it became a jungle.
I'm part way into rediscovering it again and doing A LOT of hard yakka atm, when I am motivated.

I have new dreams and ideas to put into the many bare places, as I remove thickets of lantana etc. This will all be on a tight budget and I'm ok with that.

I want to create a peaceful place where I can be.
I would like to grow food again (tell 'er she's dreamin' atm lol).
I would like to re-establish my worm farms and compost heaps.
Autumn is such a beautiful time of the year in the garden.

I'm 'alone' in my gardening journey and would love to share and hear about other's gardening antics. Hopefully we can troubleshoot any issues in our gardens and talk about any healing we're feeling too. There's a lot of knowledge we can share. I hope this thread can brighten your day!

Hi Em rose Blight is a fungal disease and yes with fungus thrives in wet conditions.Rose blight spores require water to spread. Also very humid conditions can cause it to spread. With all this wet weather I would think we will have an increase in fungal diseases on ornamentals and fruit trees especially something like root rot.
Take care,
Mark.

Hi all,

Em I made some out of white plastic icecream container lids, stuck on sticks. Maybe I didn't have enough....?

I shall experiment when they grow too big for my enclosure. I read that it works becos the cabbage moth is territorial...so supposedly they see another one and don't tresspass.

Got any tricks for slugs...?

Little bit more weeding today- all the rain didn't harm the nut grass growing thru, so the bed is full of it again 😞 I guess I don't mind, it was lovely out there this mornng before the day heated up. Also picking out the stones as I weeded.

Cheers,

J*

Yes! It's because the moths are territorial...

To mimic the living moths, they would need to be fluttering around I think?

Tips for slugs and snails >>> more birds.

I know you wouldn't use "Snail Bait" because they kill and severely disable Blur Tongued Lizards and their offspring...

maybe Mark has some tips? Hey MARK do you have tips for J*?

Their is an organic spray repellent for snails and slugs you can buy at Bunnings called EcoSnail and slug repellent by Multicrop. This is organic and is safe for wildlife.
Now for a couple of other things you can try.One thing you can try is spreading coffee grounds around the plants you want to protect. If you want to make a trap put some beer in a jar and leave it in the garden.Slugs are alcoholics and love beer.

Hi all today I pruned my elderly neighbours roses for her and took some cuttings for myself. The roses really have shot up with all the rain we had and I gave them a nice prune.I had noticed to that her hydrangea had root rot in it.So I have done my best to save it by cutting back to the solid roots and replanted in good drainage and hope for the best now.She said not to worry about it but I knew it was one of her favourite plants.

Hi all I managed to get out of bed today after feeling very depressed this morning and I weeded my strawberries and found I still had strawberry plants growing and looking healthy.

Hey everyone!

Em - my roses are doing ok ish. They didn't like the humidity spell we had for a few weeks. I feel 2 of my rose plants are not getting enough sunlight so they arnt doing the best. That's ok though, I figured that may happen so im not cut up about it. I just need to find some flowering plants that like a bit of shade.

I think I might try daisies.

Ive noticed an explosion of caterpillars around my apartment complex?! weird.

Woohoo! The garden thread is popping! must be all that rain...

Mark so great that you still had strawberries! I bet that helped life your spirits, even if just briefly. More please!

Oh and my slugs have been drunk to death, many many times, they just keep coming. I think they clone themselves off the dead ones.... I have tried crushed eggshells without much success, and tried coffee grounds, but only once... Evrything just takes such persistence, and cabbages take a long time to grow! Gradually getting rid of their habitat, which is helping, but I'm pretty sure they live in the corners of the oldest raised garden bed. I've heard ducks like slugs! Its a pity H doesn't like ducks....

Have you used ecosnail?

Em, aha! THATs why bunting! I shall try!!

Gambit I have some really lovely shasta daisy growing under a frangipani tree. It seems to cope well with the shade. If anything, it just makes the stems nice and long, perfect for the vase. I love daisies! Another lovely one is the native daisy, brachyscome. In my garden it likes being under shade and well watered, as it protects it from the heat. Can tolerate dry periods. Low spreading plant.

Cheers,

J*
