Walking Shoes - Walking and Other Exercise

Hey to anyone reading this.

Last night I had an idea about starting a new thread about exercise especially walking. I am aware that walking is very beneficial for our mental, emotional and physical well being. And by actually doing it....well it can make a huge difference to how we cope with the storms that we face in life.

OK, I am not real good at disciplining myself to walk, and have to really push myself to do it. And sometimes it is even hard to leave this bedroom. Anyway I am not a beginner walker, as I have stuck to sort of a plan before. So I know that it does make me feel somewhat better. But I only stayed on the plan for a couple of months, then gave up.....for whatever reason. So here I am again wanting desperately to not fail this time.

So I guess this thread is for anyone that does walk, anyone that is struggling to walk because of depression or anxiety issues. And anyone else really......

I am unsure of the outcome of all this. But my ideas included: Sharing about things we have found out about exercise especially about walking. Writing down the reasons that one would chose to walk ( like something to help motivate). Being accountable in same way. Sharing about the places where we actually do walk, like the beach, gym, around the block, with the dog, out to the clothesline and back. And any other useful tips that could help others. So here we go......

Hi Elizabeth

How did you feel after walking up all those steps. I am happy for you, that you did it! Way good.........

It sounds like you had a bit of an adventure getting drenched and all. I  watched a clip on YouTube, about the 1000 steps. A girl was describing about hiking up the steps. It was filmed as she was walking on up, so I now have a a bit more of an image of where you walked. Heaps of tree ferns hey! Did you notice any lyrebirds ?( not sure of the spelling there) I am guessing the air may have smelt moist. Anyway good on you....

Oh I forgot to say....

I have no idea why we do things that we know makes us worse! Beats me....

Hi Shell The air smelt fresh & the leaves really clean & green with the rain. I love rainforests with treeferns & moss etc. & nice & shady. I have walked around the Dandenongs numerous times but never seen a lyre bird. They tend to hide from people. My other keys worked so I got my car back. I'm glad my daughter had her car here so she could drive me back to my car. Otherwise I would never make it. I feel very tired & my plans to rest most of the day were messed up by the car problem & extra extra long walk.

I just lost my post when I was about to send it. The air smelt clean & fresh & the leaves on the ferns & trees were bright green & glistening from the water. I am tired after all the extra walking but the other keys worked so I was able to get my car back. Lyrebirds seem to hide so I've never seen one

Look after yourself.

Hi Elizabeth, Hi Shelley.

Well Elizabeth your walk sounds lovely, if pretty exhausting.  I also love rainforests with everything that they have to offer, including a lovely cool and shady place to go during hot weather.  If you are like me, you would not have minded the rain too much.  Its a shame that the day concluded with the problem with your car.  But a lucky break that your daughter had her car there as well.  Saved a long wait for RACV.

I also had a walk today.  Only a short one though.  I took Holly to one of the sports grounds in our local village and took her for a walk there this morning.  Then I took her with me to visit the Nursing Home where I visit my old lady friend each week.  They had a musician there today to play for the oldies, which was nice.  Holly enjoyed her little visit as well.  The old folk all love her, and she is so good with them.

So although it was only a short 15 minute walk we did enjoy it.  The oval was deserted, so we had it all to ourselves.  It is alongside a primary school and there are a couple of adjoining sports grounds where we can walk.  So we had the sounds of all the birds, and came across a couple of little lizards scuttling for cover as they heard us coming.  In the distance we could hear all the kids in their classrooms and out and about in the school grounds.  The sports ground have some beautiful huge old trees around the perimeter which provides lovely shade and lots of interest and scents and smells for Holly to check out.  We also had a little bit of rain, but only a few drops really.  Not enough to get wet.  But it has been a much cooler, and nice day today.  Much better than the previous few hot days.

Tomorrow afternoon if it isnt too hot, I may take Holly for another walk.  I'll see.  If I wasnt working tomorrow morning I would probably go to Pilates Classes, but work has to take precedence.  So Holly may be the beneficiary of the deal.  ha ha.

Happy walking,

Sherie xx

Glad you had a nice if short walk through nice surroundings

Hello Sherie

How did you go physically with your walk, were you OK? Like I know you have been struggling from lack of sleep. But I think I read somewhere that going walking and such, helps you sleep better anyway, not sure if it is true ??

Yeah I know the sound of children at a school , it is sort of a whole lot of chatter, and sometimes you really are unable to distinguish different voices or sentences. It is just sort of all mixed up. But every now and then, a loud voice may ring out.

Like yourself and Elizabeth, I too enjoy rainforests. I haven't been walking in one for a while though.

Hugs to you my friend Sherie...

Hi Shell 🙂

Thankyou for having a giggle with me on that one....This area used to be farm land and was developed for housing in 1990...Its definitely not a tourist area...but thankyou for caring 🙂

There is still still some acreage nearby and this older couple get in their seats and the Clydesdale just plonks along....Click..Clunk....and to see me trying to wrangle my 65kilo Burmese Mountain dog who was scared to death of the horse was a sight to behold 🙂 It was magical to see my BIG Woofer barking out of fear......(he never barks) The horse just ignored him ....clip clop.....couldnt care less

Hoping you are well Shell xx

WOOF!

Hi Shelley,

I went okay with my walk today.  Pretty casual though.  I just let Holly off her leash and away she goes investigating everything.  And I just stroll along at my own slow pace.  She keeps coming back to me and then heading off ahead again. Much as to say - "come on, keep up, there's so much to see and smell here".  She's funny.

No it didnt take too much out of me, in fact the fresh air probably woke me up a bit.  My appointment with the osteo/chiro on Monday seems to have settled the sciatica a little bit too, which meant I was able to move a little bit freer today than I have for a while.  So that was very welcome.

Have you been out for your usual evening walk today?  Hopefully without the burden of chocolate this time!         I hope you have not felt the need to turn to chocolate today to ward off sadness and/or emotional stress.

Thinking of you Shell, and hoping you're okay.  I have been somewhat engrossed in myself the past week, but that doesnt mean I'm not still thinking of you too.  I care very much for you.  Stay well Shelley.

Hi to all the other walkers.  Stay active.

Sherie xx

Yes Paul,

I am not in that dark place, so I would say I am well in that regard. Thankyou for thinking of me, and sort of checking up on me. That is kind of you.

That is so cute about the older couple, like they are living back in time or something. So your woofer dog must be quite strong then I am guessing. Why is he scared of the horse? That is your work isn't it, to train the dogs so they are no longer fearful?

Gosh, my mind has gone blank.

Hugs
