Anyone that has tried more than 15-20 diets and failed to meet their goal is full of despair and sadness.
What has changed a lot in the last 15 years or so is our knowledge of genetics. DNA and the complexities are slowly being unravelled to expose the secret of why we are what we are. Everything about you will eventually be known. Including why we are overweight.
Then there is the post birth reasons. Your food (both quantity and quality and how its prepared), environment, exercise etc all come into the mix that can add to over weight issues.
We know that mental illness is often a life of extreme behaviour but it is also extreme with feelings, sensitivity, more need for comfort food and things like alcohol. Some people reach for a lolly when anxious....we'd reach for a packet or two. Can we blame mental illness for our appetite? Well, so many people out there would say no sadly, they'd say "just stop putting food in your mouth". Such is the same naivety with over eating as there is with mental illness itself.
What I would like to promote, as a person that has always been over weight is a few observations using myself as an example-
- I was clearly over weight at 18 months old. I have a photo
- My mother was obese and my father had a beer belly (but didnt drink alcohol)
- All members of my family (except my late brother who was diabetic 1) has tried many many diets and not succeeded.
- The urgency of losing weight is clear. Failing knees, ankles and backs
I'm 6ft tall. My weight peaked in 2012 at 135kgms, the maximum my scales measured. It was the ultimate insult. I felt obese, I puffed, I rolled out of bed, I was unhappy. So what could I do.
My wife and I (yes she is overweight) embarked on the following plan. No we didnt call it a diet.
- Eat healthier. Keep carbs down eg less white food like pasta, rice and flour
- when we eat out (often Chinese) cut down one dish.
- Eat more fish and white meat, less red meat. (this is also as I get gout)
- sugarless chocolate
- whole oats for brekky
-home grown vegies is also therapeutic
- Worry does nothing towards reaching your goal so stop it!.
- a little exercise but only do what is sustainable. A quick 15 minute walk.
I'm now 122 kgms down 13. And this has been going for 2 years and is indeed sustainable. We dont ignore our cravings but we limit them. Easily achievable goals is best.
Accept you for being you and that includes your size. As long as you do your best to eat sensibly, exercise and stop worrying..

Hi Ronnii,
Well as fellow sufferers who knows? But I know myself that if my mood cycle is on the bad side there is no way I'd want to exercise.
This is regardless of my medication of mood stabilsers. They help but nothing is perfect in the medication field.
Just do what you can Ronnii. And eat sensibly.

This next 4 weeks will test many of us.
Try to eat sensibly and regardless of your efforts you are likely to put on weight.
Dont stress. Remember, worry is non productive. Enjoy your family and resist that extra bowl of desert.

Hey Tony, I love this thread! Since starting on a mood stabiliser earlier in the year I've piled it on. The drug I use is notorious for it, not that it puts weight on in itself but it makes you hungry - real hunger-pangs hungry, not just wanting to nibble. Sigh.
I need to try some of the great suggestions here. And I agree we should aim to worry less about it, but my clothes don't agree.
BTW turtl3 I love the description of festively plump!
If I could afford it I'd go for the emergency liposuction option. Haha.
Cheers all, and best wishes over the feasting season!

Yes Kaz, the clothes tell the story. 😞
I too have put on weight with the mood stabilisers. I wouldn't dare change the dose or the meds now, Ive had too much success with them. Unfortunately I saw a photo the other day from a xmas party and I looked sooo big!! So I still struggles with my own preaching lol
My GP said to me recently "just drop off one ration of bacon or one round of toast or one potato. I think that is doable.

I still struggle with finding cost effective recipes, that are easy enough to prepare for someone like me. If I push myself too hard to make a meal I often end up too ill to eat it. The anxiety is there in making meals, I know its finding a balance but with so much going on in my body its hard to! I need as much magnesium and calcium rich food as I can get.
I have changed from English spinach to pre-bagged. It costs more but the preparation is so much easier, and I no longer get dirt in my food. Any more tips like this? I hate the packaging wastage but have little choice. I did grow spinach in winter but not nearly enough to sustain a rabbit.

Id love to share with members our new diet.
My wife and I cut out of our lives-
Butter, potatoes, excess sugar, rice and bread.
We do eat rice but when we boil it we do so with one tablespoon if coconut oil then refrigerate the rice a minimum of 12 hours. This causes a reaction that halves the calories.
Lost 14kg in 6 months.

Hi Tony and anyone else reading,
I have been doing (to the best of my ability) Keto diet for the last 4 weeks or so. Sounds Very similar to what you did ie low/no carbs. I have a small amount of potatoes at times just because i love hot chips and sneak a few in now and then. I eat only dark chocolate 70% minimum. My scales say i have lost just over 2 kilos and i do feel slimmer. Did you increase your protein intake? I focus on having eggs, meat, salad, tuna, avocados and 'good' fats. I've been a bit slack on the exercise but i have been quite busy and on the go.I love the rice tip too!

Hi readers
Dieting! Is hard. However in March this year I cit out the following from my diet
Spuds, bread, pasta, excess sugar and rice . I lost 11 kg in 11 weeks.
When we came back from our holiday 11 weeks ago I went off that diet and have piled on 8 kg of the 11 I lost.
So getting rid of those items does help you lose weight.

Hi all,
just wanted to give an update
Three months ago my wife and I embarked on a new diet- low carb
Ive lost 12kg and she 7kg
We eat low carb bread, potatoes, soups, nut mix (daily) avocado- good fats
No crisps, chocolate, corn chips, sweet biscuits.
ok, we break the diet. If we go to the beach we buy coffee and one carrot cake between us.we mix a few chocolate coated peanuts with the nit mix
Hows your dieting going? Are you worrying?
