Hi Everybody

This is only the basic dictionary definition...

"Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention on the present. When you're mindful, you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance without judging them good or bad. Instead of letting your life pass you by, mindfulness means living in the moment without judgement"

  • Please be as blunt you wish....If you dont have an idea about mindfulness it would be great if you could let us know
  • If mindfulness hasnt worked/or is too broad a concept for you it would great if you can let us know your thoughts too
  • If mindfulness has helped you, please help others to help themselves by posting how you have embraced this mindset

It goes without saying that the forums are a judgement free zone and I really hope that everyone can jump in and have their say

Had my psych appt today. I live the view from the 14th floor window. Today I noticed a plant on the table with the magazines/water. Don't think it was there before. As I looked out the window I noticed the most beautiful cloud formation. It looked like the clouds were sitting on a ledge. There was the straightest line at the base of the clouds and then they just puffed out. I took a photo, it was so pretty.

CMF, yep you are on a roll here. When i was flying back from Sydney on Monday night, I was quite edgy but looked out the window at the awesome cloud formations and I settled really well.

Clouds are so awesome to look at!

Moonstruck: Keep trying - it is a learned skill and the more you practice, the better you will get at it.

Kanga: You have a challenge on your hands there. Have you tried your son on the Smiling Mind app? As I do not know much about autism, i am unsure how that would go.

MarkJ with Autism its mainly behavioral stuff. Sometimes manifesting in things like inappropriate touching, cuddling. Not socially interacting well with others no empathy taking things the wrong way constantly repetitive behavior. If you have seen the movie "the rain man" there you see a type of autism there are different degrees of functionality, within autistic people some can seek some cannot some are great with math some will memorize the phone book no two are the same. my lad can travel travel well by himself He has traveled to QLD by plane no less well done it twice.

kanga, thanks for the snappy overview - appreciate it.

I can see how mindfulness could assist someone with autism however I do have the thought that it could also become an exercise that someone could become quite obsessive with and that is not ideal.

Let me have a think about this one...has your lad tried mindfulness?

Mark.

Hi Mark and Kanga; (shout-out to Paul too)

People with Autism sit on a spectrum re behaviour and abilities. High functioning people can have what used to be known as 'savant' abilities. Eg...playing piano without being taught, or drawing the environment with every detail in place.

Peaceful or mindful moments for them often include spinning, rocking and repetitive actions. It's unknown why this works, but in my experience, it's very misunderstood and can be interpreted as 'out of control' behaviour.

Normal mindfulness practices don't usually work as their concentration skills can be too low. A popular movie called 'Temple Grandin' is a wonderful example of the autistic mind in action, and gave Claire Danes an Academy Award for her acting.

It's a biography of a woman who still lectures and travels advocating for autistic people around the world. As she couldn't stand to be touched or hugged, she invented a 'hugging machine' which she used to calm herself down.

As I'd worked in this field for many yrs, I absorbed the info with absolute enthusiasm. I'd recommend it for anyone who has an interest in autism.

Kanga, maybe watching this movie could give you a better understanding of autism, and hopefully your son. If not, it's still an amazing movie full of quality moments as you watch Temple struggle, strive and thrive. It depicts very well how the 'mind' is still the last frontier of discovery.

Actually, anyone who sees it may understand themselves better too; I certainly did.

Being mindful is a personal journey of discovering what works for us and what doesn't. We commonly know it as calming the mind, but some like Temple, need to calm their bodies.

Take care;

Sez x
