Help with alcohol abuse

Tinks_Violet
Community Member

Hi I have had a long time issue with alcohol abuse and I would really like to get help but I am so scared about people finding out... I know my family and limited friends are clearly aware that I have a problem but I don't want anyone else to find out. My GP knows and it's up to me to change but I don't know how. Is there any online support for alcohol abuse?

Hi Tinks Violet,

I hope it’s okay for me to extend a gentle welcome to you to the forums...

I really feel for you as I also struggle with alcohol, so I understand the secrecy and sense of “shame” (so to speak) surrounding it. Good on you for speaking to your GP about it, and for reaching out here. I think it takes self awareness and courage to face up to our problems...

There’s a service called Counselling Online, which gives free alcohol and drug counselling. They are funded by the Australian Government Department of Health. If you look up their website, you’ll find that they offer online counselling, phone counselling, self help strategies plus many other forms of assistance.

I hope this helps a little, and please feel free to write in any time again you would like. You’re always most welcome here to chat and connect, give us an update, ask questions, etc.

Kind and caring thoughts,

Pepper

Hello Tinks, thanks for being so brave to post your comment.

I'm really sorry to learn about your alcohol abuse and your doctor should know of places you can contact, where you can have a sponsor, someone to ring when you're about to drink, and then talk through the situation.

I know that AA has this but it will mean that you have to turn up to an AA meeting, please remember all these people have been through the same situation as what you are struggling with.

I'm pleased Pepper has given you a counselling service, and Family Drug Support Australia offers 24-hour support 1300 222 222, Bupa 134135 (online), Alcohol and Drug Foundation 1300 85 85 84 or speak to Beyond Blue.

If we can help you even further please let us know.

Can I say that I had a problem when going through depression so I know how you are feeling, but please don't feel alone.

Geoff.
