Can anyone recommend any self help books etc for motivation/setting goals?

I wasn't sure where to post this, but I figured it fits into the category of staying well/what works for others. So I'm wondering, does anyone have some advice/books/forums/site suggestions on building confidence, time management and goal setting? Coz frankly I suck at all three (among other things). I have tried a number of different websites and books/techniques but I figure some of you have some ideas that might be better than what I've already tried. I guess a part of it is wanting to change and doing what's necessary to make those changes. Change is really hard! I'm open to suggestions. Thanks guys 🙂

SS, you have such a positive outlook on life, despite all your hardships and challenges. Very humbling and inspiring. I think your heart must be as big as your beautiful smile. Good luck with your audition, but I think you will nail it! Go you!

Stu sounds like an amazing person. Thank you SB, I will have a look at "unstoppable". Wow everyone here has been so supportive and I'm overwhelmed by all the kind words and responses. So nice to find people who are so kind and thoughtful. It's really hard to talk to people (IRL) about such delicate and personal stuff, but for me I've no other outlet. It's comforting. 🙂

Hi GI

I just read your thread and its a good one 🙂

The best 'Life Manual' I have read has a dated title but it is still in print since the stone age (circa 1947)

'How to Win Friends and Influence People' by Dale Carnegie

The title doesn't reflect the books' actual purpose but is one of the best confidence boosting books I have ever read. It will provide you with the confidence and the ability to have a really solid foundation in your life.

Even if you just google the book...its still used in both personal and corporate circles now.

Great thread topic GI 🙂

my kindest

Paul

Thank you Paul! I have read this book years ago. Perhaps it's time to revisit an oldie but a goodie.

Cheers, GI

Hi,

Confidence

Daring Greatly by Brene Brown - about how the courage to be vulnerable transforms the way we live our lives. I actually adore Brene Brown and love everything by her; highly recommend you check out her TED talk. Love her.

Change your thinking by Sarah Edelman - a great guide on techniques in CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) which is about checking your thoughts

I also just recommend finding books you like of people you admire with confidence; it's kind of surprising yet cool to know that even the most confident people we know have struggled with serious anxiety or depression.

Time Management

1 minute habits by Raghib Ahmed - picked this up on Kindle and loved it. Basically just the idea that you do one thing for 1 minute everyday. 1 minute goes by so quickly and it might seem like nothing but it adds up and does wonders for the brain.

Stephen Covey. I did a course on Human Resources Management and he seems like the king of this field. His 7 habits book sold over 25 million copies.

Pomodoro technique - basically a way to schedule your time into chunks so you might be studying 20 minutes break for 10 and continue on. There's lots of apps out there and chrome add-ons which make it easy.

Goal Setting

To be honest I've never really found a book about goal setting that I clicked with. One thing I did really like though was the Abundance Wheel. The idea is that you rate your own life based on how satisfied you are which each category and from there you can help work out strategies to work on each part. http://www.scottepp.com/tag/abundance-in-life-wheel

SMART tool - This is also a pretty highly used technique which can be handy too in helping to set realistic and manageable expectations. https://www.projectsmart.co.uk/smart-goals.php

Hi,

I am currently reading myour first book to help with my anxiety and stress from work.

its called Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat - Zinn

its about the mindfulness based stress reduction program and how this can help with using your body and mind to face stress, pain and illness. Such an eye opening read! I am not much of a reader, but this book I couldn't put down!

Wonderful resources, thank you!

Thank you Rocky! Mindfulness is such a great tool to have. I probably don't tap into it/use it enough. Especially at work, where most of my stress comes from. Let us know how the book goes! I will certainly be coming back here for more resources.

Hi,

I have found "The Passion Test" by Janet Attwood very useful in turning my life around from being dispirited to inspired beyond what I thought was possible.

It gets to the source of who you are and what you want.

Good Luck!

Sorry for late reply! I sometimes forget which threads I've posted in so I don't get to it til a few days later lol. Thanks for your post. I'll give that one a go soon. Gosh I'd better get cracking, got all this reading to do lol.
