What can I do in the future after depression ?

I recently suffered from depression and maybe still do though I'm feeling quite a lot better. My doctor is only concerned about a little of anxiety I've had lately.

Its probably work related due to stress and little to no enjoyment in my work and people around it.

But it that's my issue with the future. I don't look at no direction as no future I look at it like endless possibilities but a lot of the things I would want to do in worried now I shouldn't because of my illness.

i always want to be in reserves,police, paramedics, or fire & rescue. I want a meaning ful job where I try to make the world better place and help people.

but now what I've gone through and self harmed I figure I should never be in those positions.

so then I think about you other things that I thought about in past like nurse or psychologist. But once again I think because of my condition now o shouldn't be on these roles.

i know my time at work now is limited since my boss knows I have a mental illness so I really need to consider my future but I really want to pursue something I want for a change just not cover the bills.

anyone else face these problems ?

Hi and welcome,

We all should have a plan b,c,d,e.... Otherwise we will be so disa0pointed we can't suffer in many ways.

At 17yo I focussed 100% in being a pilot in the air force. It didn't eventuate and with no plan b I was devastated.

After several professions I ended up in the private investigation industry. It was ideal and I spent my last 18 years in that exciting profession.

So, there are many professions out there that could be just as exciting that you can try.

Don't take any rejection personally and seek out the next best thing.

Hi.thanks for posting that.. im Max. I used to be a volunteer in the S E S. Queensland. It was fun helping people who were afected by storms.etc. i like working in rescues. To back up your squad is a good feeling.i think i learnt that from my life saving days.drilled into me.never goes away. You can always do something to help people. But give yourself a hand up when needed. And never be shy to ask for some help in return.keep a contact list the same way for yourself as if it was a rescue for soneone else. hello Erdnase, unfortunately anxiety is also related to depression which your doctor would be aware of, but perhaps hasn't mentioned this to you for your own benefit, but it depends on how close the relationship is between you and your doctor.
You can't blame yourself for not knowing what your future holds, because so many professions go through your mind on what you actually want to do, but once you are able to overcome any anxiety or depression and then decide to become a nurse, this will give you a much better understanding on how a person feels who needs the care in hospital. Hi there

Onext of the hardest things I have had to face with this illness is fear of the future and what others think of me and all the changes I have had to make because of it. I'm not sure what the put line of your job is when it comes to mental illness but anything you do in this world would be helpful to other people you just have to see it that way. I'm just a hair dresser but I look at it as i make people look good there for they feel good. and that makes me feel good.

The most important thing is that you keep well and a change in career may help u do that

Thank you for taking the time to write to us and share your thoughts and feelings:) I hear you and understand it must be very hard to have depression and anxiety but from what you are saying it seems like you are a little bit better now ? and were doing in well in the past. I definately agree, the environments we put ourselves in can impact on our mental health in a positive way or negative way. Its lovely and kind that you want to be in a profession that has meaning and helps people. There is no reason that you can't do this when you are feeling better. Have you ever heard of the "wounded healer" or even the Saints. Some of the people who have experienced the most pain in their lives become great sources of support and help to others because they can truly understand pain. I noticed mudjimbaboy said that SES might be an option. I have done this myself and aside from dealing with the other people the work was quite practical and I felt good doing that. Do you have support ? Are there people that you can talk to ? like a psychologist or some sort of therapist. If not ask your GP for a referral or call our line on 1300 22 4636. I think if you start taking care of yourself, diet excercise and some positive people around you and positive messages by podcast, you tube or reading then you feel in a better place to go and try new things and plan for the future. Also, for me I think that 'mental illness' can be a bit of a label. We all don't feel good at some point in our lives, thats the human condition. Some may need more support than others but generally we can improve our quality of lives with support and healing. I wish you all the best and please let us know how you are going if you can.
