Diet and Depression

kwirky
Community Member

I am interested in learning more about how diet and nutrition can help combat depression but am finding a lot of conflicting and confusing information online.

Does anyone have any links to resources they can share which will help with my understanding of how to start changing my life?

Thank you

Hey!

I work as a PersonalChef - one of my clients has kids with Pyrrole Disorder.

They need a specialised diet - GAPS diet - GUTS AND PSYCHOLOGY SYNDROME DIET.

Look it up, also really helpful for those of us experiencing other mental and emotional health issues.

If you have any questions re: GAPS, let me know.

I really hope that this helps!

Hi kwirky,

Welcome to the forum!

There certainly is a lot of conflicting info out there, which creates confusion. An important point to remember is that most foods in moderation are fine, and not to berate yourself for not having an 'ideal' diet/nutritional intake. I have learned this the hard way.

I honestly don't have any particular sources of recommendation. Asking your doctor is a good idea. However, I recommend avoiding heavily packaged food that contains lots of preservatives. Food colours can cause minor issues for some people, and certain colours are actually banned in some countries! Eating home-cooked food most of the time is advisable. Limiting/moderating caffeine intake is wise. Soft drinks and energy drinks are also good to limit. Try to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, lean meat/fish, and dairy. This is based on the food groups, which I'm sure you are already well-versed in. The Government has run a number of healthy eating campaigns based on the food pyramid.

Best wishes,
