- I earn a low wage but I was doing ok and most of the time I do enjoy my job. Had a bit of debt and not really a social life however I was coping. I had savings. Then I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and the pain and chronic fatigue derailed my life. I had alot of sick days and then I had to use my annual leave and then I had to change and reduce my hours which now means I lose money and then I was advised I had three months to move out of my rental which was quite reasonable rent. My new rental which is the only one that accepted me is 51% of my wage and if i hadnt accepted I would be homeless. I am seriously struggling. I literally have no money. Most of it goes to bills/food/meds/drs. I can't afford half my bills/debt. I have a loan and I spoke to the bank about hardship and explained the situation and they said they could only give me 2 months pause and then I will still be overdue but they can't stop my payments or interest and if my situation doesn't change in two months they will start collection process. I don't know what to do. I can't get a 2nd job. I can't increase my hours and if I do my health takes a dive and then I'm off sick for days/weeks. Do I pay the loan and not gas or elec or food? Sometimes I think it's best if I could just disappear...

Hi Ms_P,
Welcome back, sorry it is under these circumstances.
Everything is so expensive, it is hard to make ends meet especially if there is debt involved.
My advice would be to meet with or speak to a financial counsellor, these services are free to access and can be very helpful in advising your best actions going forward along with making sure you are getting any assistance that you may not be aware of.
I hope this is of some help to you, you don't need to sort it out by yourself.
Take care,
indigo

Hi Ms_P,
I’m so sorry you are having to deal with this situation. Have you looked into food charities such as Foodbank, Vinnies etc? I would say look for any kind of charity support you can to alleviate financial pressure.
I also have fibromyalgia which always limited me to part-time work as I had it from age 13. I was in a similar situation to you about 17 years ago. I had developed an extremely painful bladder condition at that time as well and had to stop work all together and go on Centrelink. I had just $1.23 in my bank account after paying my rent one particular week and just lived off porridge for a few days until my next payment came in. I know it’s a horrible kind of stress. I ended up doing some programs with the then Commonwealth Rehab Service, a role now taken over by disability employment agencies. It was like a kind of safety net and I retrained part time at TAFE as an education assistant and was able to return to part-time work, though on quite strong pain meds, but was eventually able to discontinue the strongest ones and I think the work eventually actually helped the pain subside. I think it was something about working with kids which felt meaningful and actually helped the pain messaging in my brain and nervous system settle somewhat.
Sorry, that’s a long story. But I’m just wondering if you could get some support through somewhere like Centrelink given you can only work limited hours? You could maybe make an appointment at a Centrelink office to ask questions (it can be challenging getting info on the phone). I’m also wondering that given you have fibromyalgia they may be able to link you up with one of the employment agencies who assist people with disabilities and medical conditions. They are less stringent than regular employment agencies and more tailored to finding work that fits with your needs.
You say you do enjoy your current work so you might want to stay there, but I just thought of that as an option if you could be supported in a job that’s easier to manage with the fibro. I’m trying to think of ways you could earn more money without more hours which you cannot do at present. I guess I’m trying to think outside the current box you are in, but it may be preferable to stay with the job you know. In any case it may be worth looking at any income support payments Centrelink may have for those in financial hardship.
You may only have one bedroom, but if you have another there is also the possibility of house sharing. But I know that it’s really important to get the right person to live with.
Do you have a supportive GP, rheumatologist or other healthcare practitioner? I hope you are ok and I think indigo’s suggestion is a good one to get free financial advice. Things can have a way of working out in ways we cannot yet see, so there will likely be a few ways to get through your situation. Take care and be gentle with yourself. Best wishes,
ER

Hello Ms_P,
That sounds so stressful to be sick and have to worry about how to pay for everything. It seems quite unfair and I don't really know enough about the services available to give any proper advice. As indogo22 and Eagle Ray have suggested, it seems like this might be something you need assistance with as it's just too much to do alone. I saw you tried to speak to the bank already but they couldn't do much. Have you been able to get to a financial counsellor or GP? Unfortunately this happens to far too many people, so I am hoping there are resources and information available.

Thank you so much for your support. I think I was really overwhelmed and had to just get it off my mind. I think the bank just pushed me over the edge. I know their big business and only care about profits but they need to be more understanding about mental health and how things can just change. I have sent an enquiry to speak to a financial counsellor and hopefully they can help deal with the banks. I spoke to another of my debts and they were quite helpful at the moment. They paused my account and stopped all payments and I have 21 days to respond with a payment plan so hopefully I can work out something affordable. I can see some light at the end of a very long tunnel.

Hi again,
I am so glad you have made some inroads in finding solutions. Eagle Ray's suggestion of meeting with Centrelink would be a positive step. If they are able to help and you are able to get a health care card, that will open doors for concessions on your utilities and I did some reading today about rental subsidies, it would be worth looking into this, also low income housing.
I know how hard it is, I am still paying off a debt that I had when I stopped working to care for family members with cancer. There is help out there, sometimes you need to turn over a few rocks to find it, but it is there.
Take care and all the best with the financial counsellor, they can be very helpful.

Hello Ms_P,
Thanks for replying and it's good to hear you got a little bit of respite at least. It's tough enough to manage your health issues without having to worry about the impact on your financial situation as well.
Please take care for now, and you are always welcome to continue posting here if you feel like getting something off your mind.
James
