I've recently been looking into online help options. Nothing so far has been helpful. I need to talk to people that are fighting, or know what it's like. The AA chat room wasn't for me. Too many people talking about unrelated topics. Looking for some real advice and coping strategies. Face to face meetings just aren't for me yet.

hello, well I am so pleased that you have posted a comment and come to the site, because there are so many discussions about having an addiction, and in this case it's drinking caused by depression, and I am well aware that I was certainly someone who had this problem, which was one reason why my wife divorced me.
I also went to AA but it wasn't for me because the same people stood up every meeting and said the same story every time, so I got nothing from it, whereas some people could relate with these meetings, I opted out.
Advice and coping stragtegies vary from person to person as well their different circumstances, so I will try and help you as much as I can, so would firstly love to hear a bit more so that we can start to talk, and remember this site is anonymous, we don't know who you are and for you that's good.
Love to hear back and please don't worry, because I will tell you everything about what happened to me. Geoff.

Hello Name, welcome to the forum. Well done for reaching out here, I know how hard it is to accept we have a drinking problem and to realise how much that's contributing to our depression.

We can help you mate. I'm a recovering alcoholic, nearly five years sober, and there are others on the forum who have also been through this.

I've had depression most of my adult life and self-medicated with alcohol for a long time until it became the bigger problem. Getting sober was the hardest thing I've done, but I did it and so can you my friend. Take a look at my profile under Who are our community champions, it has my story.

We have a thread under Staying Well called Battling the Booze. Read it through, and join us there.

I am off to work now (it's about 7.15am ) but I will be online tonight and on the Battling thread if you want to join me. We have much to share, and we can and will walk with you through this.

In the meantime, take a good look around the forum - there are other members here in similar situations who have had some advice from us, you might find some comfort in those threads.

I expect others will be along here too to offer support during the day.

Hope to see you tonight

Kaz
