Panic attack calm down

Superdry87
Community Member

Hi everyone,

I mostly just came here to try and calm myself down. I need to feel connected to people or talk to people when having a panic attack.

Also wondering if there are other people out there that have an panic attack so bad that you vomit?

I don't usually have a problem with anxiety attacks, not for a long time. I am on medication for scitzoaffective disorder and when it is making me tired and I fight it, this is when i seem to have panic attacks.

As mentioned, I really just came by to calm myself down.

Thanks for reading 🙂

Hi Superdry and welcome to the BB Forums.

I too experience panic attacks from time to time, usually as a result of triggers related to my PTSD. Yes I too have panic attacks which result in vomiting, bad shaking, racing heartbeat, difficulty breathing, etc. These are all fairly typical panic attack symptoms. Others you may experience are: lightheadedness, dizziness, nausea, chest pain, a feeling of tightness in the throat, inability to swallow, abdominal pain and cramping, feeling out of control.

Do you see a psych on a regular basis Superdry? You may find some therapy useful in helping you to develop some self management and coping strategies to help you through these panic attack situations.

Anyway, I mainly wanted to welcome you here, and say well done for taking the step to join BB. I agree that when you are in a panic situation it is definitely a time where you need someone around you to talk to. I hope you find comfort in posting to the forums here.

I think your post was written some hours ago. I hope you are okay now?

You will find that the members here are very helpful, understanding and compassionate. We are all like you, we each battle our own mental health issues, and draw support from others here who experience similar situations. I hope you feel comfortable in posting again, and I look forward to seeing you around some of the other threads when you feel comfortable in doing so. I'd suggest you have a look at some of the Social Zone threads as a good way to connect with others. See you around.

Sherie

Thank you Sherie 🙂

I am feeling a bit better now. Many years ago I tried cognitive behavior therapy and I have been pretty much been fine with controlling panic attacks since then. Except for recently.

I know it's stress related so no doubt I will be back to engage in these forums. I read through some posts last night and even doing that made me feel better to know that i am not alone.

Thanks again!

Dear Superdry87~

Sherie has pretty well covered most things in her post, the only thing I'd think worth asking is in relation to technique during the attack. I suspect you may know all this already, but just in case you don't...

I too am subject to panic attacks, though thankfully a lot less than I used to be. I find that the unreasoning fear they generate is the worst thing, with physical symptoms not far behind.

I try to change the way my mind works, concentrating both on the fact I've come out OK umpteen times before and at the same time try to steer my mind into unrelated thoughts -something I suspect you are already doing by reading here. Concentrating on something can work.

I use controlled breathing to give a calming effect plus settle the CO2 imbalance. If possible I physically move away from the scene when I can.

If all else is ineffective I resort to the free smartphone app Smiling Mind. This is not something you can jump straight into, it takes a fair bit of practice but I've found it well worth it.

Well I don't know if of this is of any help, at least you know others have similar and understand

Very interested that you have come to the Forum to calm down whilst having a Panic Attack. I have experienced Panic / Anxiety Episodes at various times following my malignant Brain Cancer diagnosis, over ten years ago now. I actually had two attacks last week, hence I am seeing a Counsellor today at my local Community Health Centre. This is my first post on this Forum, and I sympathise with all subscribers to Beyond Blue who are going through what I am.

With all my support,
