Hi I have very bad irritable bowel syndrome which is causing me to feel very anxious and depressed. I've tried so many things. I think I need to see a psychiatrist that specialises in this. Can anyone recommend a good one please?

Hiya! I cant recommend anyone in particular. You'll have to go to your Gp to be referred to a psychiatrist. You can use Google to search for psychiatrists in your area, but your doctor will have even more people in his database. Worth noting that GP's can also prescribe medication. If you go to Menu > Get Support> Find a professional, you can use  that to find a doctor near you that specialises in mental health.

I also have this problem. I have IBS, and its a cruel circle. When i get anxious, it makes my IBS plays up and causes lots of pain, nausea and bowel problems. And when my IBS plays, the symptoms then make me feel anxious (because i become worried about feeling ill or urgently needing a bathroom while in public)

Really good news though. There is a growing amount of research on particular antidepressants showing good results in treating not only anxiety and depression, but irritable bowel syndrome as well. Your doctor can prescribe you one of those antidepressants.

When you have IBS you have to get to know what your "irritants" are- the things that irritate, basically. Anxiety and stress are common irritants, so getting therapy and going on a medication to reduce the anxiety means it stops irritating so much.

Other common irritants are smoking and drinking alcohol.

The usual biggest irritant of all is your diet. A dietician, naturopath or even a clever doctor should be able to help you go through your diet and try removing/ bringing in different things to figure out what it is you're eating thats causing issues. Common ones are fructose (in fruits and some vegies), gluten (wheat), lactose (dairy), beans (hard to digest), and spicy or greasy/ fatty foods. For me its a bit of everything- i'm just easily irritated. I've learned that i can have small amounts of those things on an occasional basis, but not everyday or in large amounts. its not that hard- I swapped my dairy milk for rice/ oat or coconut milk (not soy- hard to digest). I eat gluten free pasta, i only eat fruits low in fructose.

And my symptoms are not a problem now, ive got both the anxiety and IBS under control 🙂 so no more pain, nausea, or other bowel issues from IBS, and no more anxiety symptoms from the anxiety. 🙂

Good luck
