Near Constant Chest Pain

Hi everyone,
For the past few months - particularly so in the past week - I've been having near constant chest pain, tightness, painful stabs. Initially, due to palpitations, I thought it was my heart and went for various tests (bloods, ecg, echocardiogram). They've essentially chalked it down to nothing. However, I'm really suffering with these continued feelings. I'm wondering if anyone else has experience with anxiety and chest pain? Any kind works would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Hey there,
I have also went through the same thing back in 2017 until this day, however it is a lot better now. I was never diagnosed but I went through almost everyday with difficulty breathing and chest pains. I think those symptoms resulted after I went through friendship strains and was severely guilt tripped by my own self. I tried telling my mum but she said I was stupid hahah. Honestly, I never found a solution for it but as I've started to find myself in the right environment with the right people, they acted as a great distraction and soon I was able to regain my breathing and the chest pains faded. Typing this right now is honestly a trigger for my breathing to stop so I guess it has never fully went away. Also, when some people in my past are mentioned or when I have to be forced to be socially included sometimes, I have severe chest pains and difficulty breathing as well. Just know you are not the only one who is experiencing this but although I don't have a solution to fix your problem, or our problem, I hope it puts you more at ease, and I know this sounds cliche, but eventually it will get better. Just position yourself in the right environment and work on self love. It makes everything so much better.

Dear Patrickj~
You are indeed not alone. The year before last after a continuing and particularly stressful set of events at work I became aware of a dull ache in my chest which became continually worse, this was accompanied by irregular heartbeats, tightness of the chest and some difficulty in breathing.
I did not put two and two together and thought I had probably a heart condition, my age, weight, lack of exercise and being an ex-smoker all pointed that way. I started to collapse and I ended up in A&E. I was held for observation and given just about every test you could think of, including an iodine MRI.
All test came back negative, I was as healthy as a horse.
I've had an anxiety condition, together with other similar matters for a very long time, and do have regular physical effects from this, from headaches to stomach problems. The heart sensation was new.
So if this sounds familiar, bearing in mind everyone will be a bit different, then at least you know those tests you took are in all probability correct. Can you think of anything in your life that might have been extra stressful to set this off?
As the cause of my particular stress was removed the symptoms went with it and I continued on with my regular regimen of therapy and meds, which basically keeps things under control. I've had a couple of more minor episodes since for which the triggers were less upsetting.
The only real way to rid yourself of this highly unpleasant and even frightening set of symptoms is by treating the base cause, your anxiety. Have you talked to your doctor abut a formal diagnosis and possible avenues of treatment? I have never improved just by myself, just by getting support.
I'd also like to ask about personal support. Is there anyone in your life there to talk with and support you? Facing these things alone is extra hard.
I hope to talk with you again

Hi Corix,
Thank you for your reply.
There is the rational side to me, which knows that I'm essentially creating the symptoms. But then I have the constant battle with the illogical side too. It's exhausting. Worse, it usually hits me at night or early morning, when I'm most vulnerable to these thoughts.
I have very bad health anxiety, so my heart - I guess - is something I can concentrate on while everything around us is happening.
My life is extremely stressful at the moment. We were supposed to move overseas, which was cancelled. Then I lost my job due to Covid19, finances are strained. So, I know there are stresses in my life.
It's just that the chest pain makes me worried sick.
I see a psychologist and my GP prescribed me medication, though I'm hesitant to take it. I've been taking some painkillers to ward off the pain/feelings - though that could just be psychosomatic.
My partner is very supportive.
I'm hoping time will sort me out.
Thanks for your kind words.

Hi Rvch1117,
Thanks for reaching out and sharing your story. It's some comfort to know that there are others who have experienced the same.
Good luck to you.

Dear Patrickj~
You are quite right, here are two sides to us, the logical and the rest. I too found the logical side was not always that much help.
Just at the moment you are facing great practical difficulties, though the cancellation of the move might have been a blessing in disguise.
Really the only way I found to treat such physical symptoms as they happened was to do the things you do for a racing mind in an anxious loop, whch include distract, exercise and all the rest. I'm sure you are familiar with them, if not sing out.
I particularly recommend the free smartphone app Smiling Mind. With practice 😞 it will take your mind away from whatever you were stressing on. You may well find it decreases your symptoms and slows your mental battle.
I also agree late night is a prime time

I have had ongoing chest pains for nearly 4 years now.
It started with a panic attack one day and ever since I get chest pains, palpatations and a shortness of breath feeling. I have seen a cardiologist 2 years ago and had a stress test, ecg, and ultrasound but all came back clear, which is good but doesn't help when you get pain. I have been told from my doctor it's anxiety and reflux that causes it.
I find the pains happen mainly at night when im watching tv and am relaxed.
Wish one day I could wake up and they stop.
Know that you are not alone in this as it seems quite common.

Hi
I am the same near constant chest pain for 7 years. Had every heart test including stress tests annually all good. Not sure what brings it on seems to be worse at night. Learning to live with it I know there is no problem. I lie in bed worrying so get pain as can't relax it's a vicious circle. I have noticed if try and keep occupied I forget about the pain. Last night I was awake from midnight till 3am so tired today and stressed so more pain

Somedays I am fine then bam it happens again.
It's nice to know others get it too but wish for all of us it would stop or the doctors could say what causes it.
