Hi Sunflower32
Food is a tricky one, isn't it. I personally take comfort in eating unhealthy foods when I feel sad or anxious. But it can also make me feel bad after doing it. I think comfort food is a common thing. I hope you can find comfort in the knowledge that you're not the only one.
Have you thought about talking to a GP about your the thoughts that you're struggling with? I spent many years struggling with debilitating anxiety, and speaking openly to my GP is the best thing I have ever done for myself.
As for the loss of your friendship, I'm so sorry to hear about this. However, friends come and go in our lives. While it may have been that your friend found it hard to understand your struggles, it may also have been that you both followed different paths over those 9 years. These things happen - as devastating as it can be. Is there someone else who you can trust to spend some time with?
I'm not sure I'm sounding very helpful, but I just wanted to reach out and tell you that I care.
ps - how amazing are sunflowers!?!?

Hi sunflower32
The binge eating can certainly be a tough one to conquer. At 49, I still do it myself occasionally. Knowing why we do it is key to self mastery. Not sure if this resonates with you but for me there are a few reasons - 1) When I'm after a hit of dopamine to the brain. It's that reward chemistry in us that gives us the high or hit of satisfaction we may be looking for. 2) I can find myself sitting on the couch 'fueling up' when I'm low in energy. I admit, there are far more productive ways to gain energy without reaching for Twisties, chocolate and cola (my faves). 3) When I'm feeling a little lost in life. The binging is a familiar 'fall back' that allows me to not have to go out and find constructive challenges. I do laze a little too much at times. We gotta forgive our self for these moments and look beyond them, toward positive constructive change.
Sunflower, if there's one significant thing I've discovered over the years when it comes to friends and family, some of them may not be all that crash hot when it comes to accepting the challenge to raise others (to higher states of happiness, consciousness etc). When you're wishing someone would just show up in your life and save the day and no one seems to be doing this, you can be left thinking 'Why am I not worth the effort?' I'll let you in on a secret - it's not you, it's them a lot of the time. This is something I learned after coming out of my years in depression. Nowadays, I insist people put effort into my life when I'm feeling low in energy, a little lost or a little down, as this is what I often do for them. There are a few key players in my life who are masters at raising me yet the rest, for some reason, aren't deeply caring or conscious enough to have what it takes. Some are masters at raising us and, unfortunately, some are masters at bringing us down or letting us sit in a low.
By the way, whilst folk may insist we're a little too sensitive at times and we need to 'toughen up', I'll throw my own back at them 'Your issue is...you're just not sensitive enough'. Sunflower, do you know anyone who is sensitive enough to understand what it takes to raise you? If not, Sophie_M has suggested a few resources worth considering. Raising yourself to the challenge of looking into these resources could help make the difference you currently need. Raising our self can be a tough battle at times, especially without guidance and support.
I'm glad you accepted the challenge of posting here.
🙂
