I had a lapse, what to do?

Hi guys,

last night I had a lapse, I've been so good staying off google! But last night I struggled (as I know I sometimes will). And googled.

I came across a study that suggested OCD could increase your chance of scizophrenia, not just that but children of OCD parents had an increased risk.

As with anxiety, I'm now stressing. Although my official diagnosis is GAD with some obsessive thinking.

I have started on an SSRI which is helping but as expected it's not a miracle cure. As my psyciatrist said the key to me getting better is me!

dear Bluey moon, it can be true that if a parent has OCD  then the kids can get it as well, but neither of my parents had OCD and I was the only one in the family, where I had 4 siblings that didn't get it, plus as I said my twin didn't have it and we were obviously in the womb for 9 months.

The same applies to parents with depression and if they may have schizophrenia this doesn't mean that their children will also get it, and again neither of my parents had it either.

What the net says is open to so much speculation, so people suddenly assume that they could have what the net says, so I could google 'why my marriage broke up' mentioning long depression, OCD and drinking as self medication, and what will it will come up with, I'd hate to think, but here I am replying to people on this site for more than 10 years, and I don't believe I am neurotic, nor or you.

As your psychiatrist said ' the key to me getting better is me! ', and I mean no harm by saying this, but try and keep on googling illness's, because this will cause a relapse time after time, and it's not healthy for you.

Sorry but you need to well. Geoff. x

Hello Bluey, where do you tend to do your googling? Is it on your phone? I'm pretty sure you can get apps that will lock your phone for a period of time, with the excpetion of making emergency calls. You could try that as a way to protecting yourself against the googling urge.

Hi Jess, yes on my phone! And the apps sound like a great idea, thank you for the advice, I appreciate anything I can get!

As soon as I read about a symptom, I think about it over and over til I convince myself I have it (eg: paranoia and I read stories til I convince myself I beleive it, lol, I'm pretty convincing)

i really appreciate your advice.
