Anxiety is back after nearly a decade

Hi, I'm currently going through some really bad anxiety. I haven't had to deal with anxiety for nearly 10 years, and I have forgotten how draining physically and emotionally it is. I am a 35 year old father of two, with the most supportive partner in the world. I have been having really bad anxiety for the last few weeks, and am 6 days into medication to treat the anxiety. It is waking me up a couple of times a night, so I'm not really getting much sleep, so the cycle just continues every day. I have had a lot happen over the last 10 years, and I think I have bottled it all up and now it's trying to escape. I lost both my parents between the ages of 25 and 29, and I never really sought out help for that. I don't really feel depressed, just constantly anxious and nervous. I'm really struggling to cope with it. It's at the point now where I'm taking time off work for it.

It's great you're on Medication but if an Antidepressant, may take up to a few weeks to kick in.

Have you seen Psychologist yet? I am having my first appointment this week as have just started getting Anxirty which turned into a full blown Panic attack on Friday. Currently I am taking medication to calm me down but want to get of this asap as it can become addictive.

It's scary stuff, probably the worst stuff I have been through mentally as you feel like you're losing your mind.

I have just started reading a book called "The Happiness Trap" , so far it seems pretty good and the way I see it, the more info I have, the more prepared I am.

I hope you start to feel relief soon, as being new to this, I can see how unpredictable and scary it can be.

Good luck Steve and remember the forums are always here, full of people who are going through very similar things.

Thanks for the kind words matey, I went back to my GP today, and I had an ECG that came back fine, and I have put together a mental health plan and I will be seeing a psychologist in a couple of weeks.

It's awesome there are so many people here helping each other out, what a great place beyond blue is, and the people that are on here.

Hi there

This happened to me as well. Free for about 9 years..& then wham, it came back last November after another trauma.

I find it hard to believe that I’m back in this place.. I’ve been on leave for about 2 months as I can’t work. I was hospitalised for 6 of those weeks.. no sleep and severe anxiety. Mine is all day from he early hours of the morning. I’m not even sure how it went away last time, but here’s hoping it goes soon

Hi Steve

thankyou for your kind post above! (and to Zorn and Missy72 for the TLC too)

I understand about anxiety coming back...it can happen and yes its an awful place to be in....yet treatable..My condolences for the loss of both of your parents over such a small period of time...I have re read and then re read your opening post again....This is a very sad and tragic loss to experience Steve

Back to your thread topic......as you know sleep is a great healer and having broken sleep patterns can leave us exhausted or even more anxious the next day..

You are a champion for being so proactive with your health and engaging a counsellor and good on you! I have been on SSRI's (antidepressants) since I was 36 and they have helped me get the traction I needed after having chronic anxiety attacks since I was 23

Zorn has mentioned an excellent resource above with 'The Happiness Trap'...Good1

Just a caring note about meds....some people have a fear of addiction....yet under the supervision of your doc they are an essential part of the recovery process combined with seeing a GP/Counsellor/Therapist etc

any questions are always welcome! Your well being is paramount here

I am so sorry for your loss Steve...

my kind thoughts

Paul

Hey Missy72, im sorry you are feeling this way. It can be really hard dealing with anxiety, and so exhausting.

My anxiety also starts from the early morning, it's a vicious cycle hey. I had forgotten how bad it can make you feel, it can get pretty scary at times.

I hope you start to feel better soon, and you find something that works for you.

Hey Paul

Thanks for the kind words and support mate!

I managed to go back to work Wednesday, I think getting back into routine is a big help.

My sleeping seems to be getting a little better, still waking, but not for long periods of time.

Thanks again mate, it's so good having this level of support from all of you.

Hey Steve!

Thanks for your kind post mate! Huge effort for getting back to work yesterday...Nice1 🙂

When we are going through this awful anxiety, quality sleep can sometimes be hard to get. I have included a copy & paste link to an excellent thread called 'Sleep'.....This is a huge thread Steve...yet there is a ton of info that is super helpful....if you wish to have look!

any questions are always welcome

Paul

Thanks very much, I'll have a good read tonight.

Hi Steve

'Typo'.....When I mentioned that the sleep thread is a huge one...I neglected to mention how long it actually is...sorry about that! It was created in 2016 and has over 300 posts....

I hope that you are having a good weekend 🙂

Paul
