Anxiety at upcoming treatments

Steveo22

Hello

This is my first post here. I have a major current health issue that I have to be treated for and am having major anxiety about facing and completing this treatment. I have long term PTSD and anxiety that I have had for most of my adult life. I have at times sought help but never stuck with it. The way I feel at the moment is I have enough mental power to deal with life generally but in the face of this current situation im really having trouble coping and remaining positive. I feel some of these old long term anxiety issues starting to take control. I had a major anxiety attack while testing and fitment of a mask used in treatment. It was humiliating and distressing and has rattled me going forward as I will have to use this mask daily for 7 weeks.

Hello Steve, and good on you for joining the forums, so just take your time when you want to read other comments and remember as much as you might react to what's been said, it's another person's feelings, and although their reply might be different to your circumstances, you might be able to learn something new.

If you can get a letter from your doctor, knowing that you don't have this virus and/or been vaccinated, then they may say that you might not need to wear a mask.

With treatment for PTSD and anxiety, the counsellor needs to know reasons why you aren't coping, it's hard work and may open different doors that you're not used to, but you need to tell them that you're having difficulty coping with what has been said, then they should change their technique and take it slowly with you.

Also, ask them how to cope until you see them again, this is important for you.

Take care.

Geoff.

Hi Geoff

Thanks for replying to my post. I should of added in my first post is the mask I have to use during treatment is for radiation therapy. Its basically a plastic mesh that is form fitted to your face and shoulder area and basically holds you in the same position on the table for each treatment. The treatments are for cancer of the head and neck area. I made it 5 mins into the fitting before I told them they had to take it off. Its critical I wear this each day but is causing me distress thinking about having to wear it.

Gidday Steveo and welcome to our forum!

I think Geoff has made some pretty good points which I hope help a little. Long term PTSD cannot be much fun at all and I feel for you.

Steveo I sincerely trust the medical treatment will be successful - try to start visualising life on the other side and all the positives it may bring.

I know these thoughts are a bit out there, but hope that in reading them, some of it may be of use to you.

All the very best - happy to stay in touch if that would help.

Regards, The Bro
