Anxiety and nausea

Hi, I'm 21 years old and I've suffered from anxiety from the around the age of eight. During this time my anxiety continues to change my symptoms, as my resilience builds against current symptoms. Because of this, each time I'm faced with the question - is this anxiety, or am I actually ill this time? As of the past month or so I've been feeling extremely nauseous from time to time, and I've also been light headed and feeling panicked. I made the mistake of googling 'what causes nausea?', and this has now increased my nausea and vertigo severely because of the possible illnesses that could be the root of my symptoms. I was previously unaware that anxiety could actually cause nausea or vertigo, so I suppose a large portion of me is worried that I am suffering an actual illness. It seems when I start to feel nauseous, it gets worse, because it consumes my each and every thought. It has now gotten to the stage where I don't want to leave my bed, and I'm struggling to eat anything at all, in fear it will make me sick. My question is: has anybody else experienced this? and if so, how did you get over the nausea or the feeling as though you're about to faint?

Thank you.

Hi Annie, I know this is an old thread so not sure if you receive this. How are you feeling these days?

I was very much like you. I had nausea for 6 months, loss of appetite, lost alot of weight, tightness in throat, anxiety attacks all day, every day... you name it, I had it.

I started to take medication 2 months ago and was what saved me. It took about 6-8 weeks to really get the full benefit and the first 3 weeks were hell. It made my anxiety 10 x worse but it was worth hanging in there.

Of course I have my bad days but they're less extreme and less frequent.

I'm actually feeling a bit yuck today but I'll ride it out and I know I will feel better again.

Thank you for the reply. I'm glad you have found some relief with medication. I have an appointment with a psychologist tomorrow hopefully she will have some helpful strategies. If I'm no better in the next few weeks I will ask my doctor to start me on antidepressants although the thought of my nausea getting worse, even for a short time, is putting me off a bit. Guess there are not too many other options.

Yeah, it was hard but everyone is different. You might not experience increased nausea and you might find no temporary side effects. If you do though, just remember that they will pass 😊

Remember though, and this is a mistake I have made, dont stop seeing a psychologists, continue to eat healthy and excercise even when you think you feel better. I stopped all of this and now I'm having a big setback, even while on medication.

I know these are old messages but they have helped me feel that I am not alone with the symtoms I have , the nausea really does get you down ,some times I go to bed to sleep to get away from it but that is making the agoraphobia worse. So I have to learn to cope , have started again after weeks to take my dear dog for short walks I don't go far as I feel I cant breath when to far from safety of home. Thank you all for being on here I am sure you are all helping more than just me to learn to cope again. I am not alone, I can do this I chant to myself now. thank you

I have been prescribed anti anxiety meds by my gastro doc but have not taken them .My Gp has sent off blood test to a pathology which looks for bacteria , parasites and fungi which may have entered the blood . As explained by my Gp any of the above factors may contribute to my nausea .
