im never passionate about anything

I’ve never had any passions. i love my friends and family but i never had a hobby i enjoyed so much i wanted to turn into a career?? for example some people are very passionate about art or history or music to the point where they’d do it everyday for the rest of their life. I’ve never had a passion. not even when i was little. i feel like i never had any dreams. or maybe i did, but I’ve forgotten most of them by now. whenever i had dreams, reality hits. life isn’t a movie and i have to be realistic. for example, being a famous actress is just unrealistic and one can only dream. i could never dream because i was always told that things were “too far-fetched”. “it only happens in movies” and “it only happens to one in a million, don’t bother” are things i hear constantly. adults always choose the safest most realistic path, and i hate to say it, but i understand why and will probably do the same. its so unfortunate how little kids always have dreams, but their dreams get crushed by reality as they grow up. so many people work in boring jobs, such as being an HR manager in a finance company. i can almost be 100% sure that isn’t what they wanted to do as a kid, but yet, here they are. because they chose the safest most realistic path. money is a key part of our lives, and we always tend to choose “safe” jobs because they have steady pay. why can’t we just stop using money. why can’t we just live. and have fun? no money, no trade. and yes, i know thats unrealistic too.

thinking about this has made me fall into a downward spiral because im 16 and will have to pick a college major/career path to pursue, and never having any passions has just affected me a lot. i really wish the world wasnt like this 😕

Hi sadgirlhours

I am really pleased that you have reached out when you are feeling so very overwhelmed at "what the future holds". I am a 45 year old mum and I see these same concerns in my 15 year old son. Life is really quite different to when I was your age and I am really kind of sorry about that. There is so much pressure on "what do you want to do when you are older?", "what do you want to study at uni?", "when are you going to get a job?"....Can I say to you , I am still figuring out what I like, my hobbies change all the time, I am not even sure I have one thing i really love at the moment, especially at the moment with all these COVID changes to our lives. Can I say that THIS IS PERFECTLY FINE...you don't have to figure it all out today, you don't have to figure it out tomorrow, I think the best advice I have is to do one day at a time, the very best you can. If that is at school, do the classes today, give it your best.

Things in life will cross your path and you can see if they interest you, if not that is fine too. Some people know at 9 years old that they want to be a nurse and they fulfill that and go on to work as a nurse until they retire, that is what works for them. Some people change jobs 10 times in their life, and that is fine too. I think you just need to try different things and see what talks to your soul. The key really is happiness and I really do believe in the saying "If you can do something you love you will never work a day in your life." This is so very true, however also does not happen for everyone, as you say...we get stuck in a yukky job with no vision and no inspiration, just to put a meal on the table and pay the bills, this is a little sad however, maybe those people get joy from other things too...it is such a personal journey.

You will find passion, who knows what it will look like and what form it will take, but now I think you are so busy trying to "figure it all out" that you are not actually having time to stop, to breathe and to enjoy each moment as you are so worried about "supposed to"...supposed to be doing this, supposed to be doing that...supposed to have it all figured out.

I am so proud you reached out to chat and I am not sure if I have helped at all but I hope that you can take each day at a time, life is short and you will figure out who "sadgirlhours" is...although I hope we can have a happier nickname for you...life is a journey.

Chat to you some more if you like to.

Hugs

Sarah

Hello sadgirlhours

I love your post because while growing up, it never really seemed like I was passionate about things. Like since you were 8, you knew you wanted to be a doctor. That was not me.
I don't really have any hobbies too. They were a bit expensive for me. I remember the fear of not knowing what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I remember how I was really desperate too to the point where I got direction from my star sign (too funny) I remember how I took a lot of career quizzes. I even asked one of my teachers, she told me not to worry and that my 'passion' will just come to me.

I thought my passion was eating, she told me "not your survival needs"

I guess you want to choose something you know you will enjoy for the rest of your life. But remember, I do not know this answer for myself.

I agree, having a 9-5 job sounds a bit boring but I think it's better than having nothing to do. Like absolutely nothing.

I choose my degree by having somewhat of an idea of what area to go in. I like health care. I like helping people and listening to them. It's okay to not know where you want to go, I think I might change my degree too.

People change careers, some people go to uni when they are 25, you are wherever you are in life and this is where you are meant to be

hello sadgirlhours! i fully understand how you feel, as the youngest in my family its very easy to feel like everyone has their lives sorted out. im not sure if youre the youngest or have any siblings but seeing people with lives that seem figured out makes it very easy to feel overwhelmed by the future. i can tell you right now, i have nothing that i want to do, no drive or career im interested in. i used to get severe anxiety from this (among other things) but after talking with my sister, ive realised that its okay to not know what you want to do. sometimes finding what you want to do and trying careers can be the most fun part.

one of my sisters (who has suffered with anxiety about this sort of thing) is in her second year of uni, has no job and no clue what she wants to do but shes just enjoying life with the people she loves! the future can seem scary and confronting but it also brings new experiences. if theres a career you thought would be fun even for a passing moment, i find having a look through the requirements and what the job involves is helpful. for example, i used to want to work with dogs but i was unsure in what field. as a person who enjoys helping people and who has multiple family members who were officers, being a K-9 officer was appealing to me. not so much anymore, so when something comes to me, ill try to find a career with something i love. (remember that your job doesnt always have to be your favorite thing in the world, yes it would be ideal if we had our dream jobs, but in the end its just to earn money)

make sure to surround yourself with people you love and care about and maybe speak to someone who seems put together (that you feel comfortable with of course), a lot of tips and tricks can be found there.

i truly do hope that your life is full of joy and this helped even in the slightest.

sending love your way 🙂
