Derealisation- struggling with reality

Jocey

Hi everyone,

I am a young person suffering with my mental health. I have experienced psychotic episodes before and for the past year I have been experiencing what I think is a form of derealisation. It is quite scary.. And at times very difficult to cope with. Sometimes just making it through the day is an accomplishment. I am currently taking antipsychotics but unsure if they are working effectively. I notice the world around me differently to how I use to and I sometimes feel overwhelmed in a busy setting.. I can see movement all around me happening and notice every detail, every flinch. If that makes sense. I tend to think about what I am going through a lot which probably makes things worse. It's difficult having something wrong with your mind and having to put on a brave face everyday when no one knows what your dealing with.. I am only young and I have so many dreams and aspirations for my life I don't want to be set back by my mental state. I think the hardest part is just focusing on the now and present moment and not worrying about what lies ahead. Is anybody else having a similar experience? Feel free to pass on some wisdom or support to me it would be very appreciated. Thanks

Hey Jocey, welcome to the forums and thank you for sharing.

I am sorry to hear you're feeling like this. I have suffered through a period of mild de-realisation during the worst of my depression, so I know how scary it can be. People often say that medication and/or antidepressants make them "feel like a zombie", so perhaps ask your GP about the side effects of the medication you're currently taking.

Are you seeing a doctor or a psychologist? I always recommend talk therapy as an option, as professional help can really be a useful tool. I also suggest you look into the technique of Mindfulness i.e. practising clearing your mind and living in the moment. There are tons of books on it, and I'm sure the internet is full of resources too. I am currently reading a book on mindfulness, and it's a great insight on the way you see yourself and your life.

Hi Jocey,

Welcome to BeyondBlue and thanks for reaching out.

I'm sorry that you've been struggling with this feeling.  Have you told anyone about it - are you seeing a psychologist or GP?

Please know that you aren't alone.  There are lots of people in the forums who have gone through very similar feelings.

Sometimes this feeling can actually be brought on by medication.  You mentioned that you were taking antipsychotics so it would be super helpful for your GP to know what you are going through just in case it is related.  Especially because you mentioned how you 'notice every detail'.

If it's not related to your medications, I think going to see a psychologist would be the safest next bet.  There are lots of things to help us stay 'present' such as mindfulness or sensory grounding, but it can be really difficult to do that if you've been struggling with this for a while.

I hope this helps,
