I wonder, if struggling with managing The over use of harmful substances , whether consulting a medical professional really helps? How likely is it that substance abuse is managed with pharmaceuticals (other substances)? Just wondering.

Hello Aboutit, welcome to the forums and you have asked a very good question.

Medical advice will definitely help if you decide that that's what you want to do, stop using harmful substances.

There is little point in consulting a medical professional who is trained and qualified in this field if you are only going because someone wants you to do this or you have been instructed by a court ruling to get help.

You can' replace one addiction with another one.

If you want help, then it's out there.

Best wishes.

Geoff.

Dear Aboutit

Hello and welcome. This is a good place to talk about taking illegal drugs which is what I understand you are referring to. It's also the best idea to get help, starting with your GP.

There is a difference between taking prescribed medication and taking illegal substances and there is a reason for this. While legal drugs may have an unfortunate effect on some people, and this has happened to me, these other drugs are designed to make you an addict and will severely affect your health and well-being the longer you use them. They can also cost you all your money and eventually your life. This is what happens regardless what you have been told.

You get no medical support because you do not ask for it. If you become ill you will go to hospital by ambulance and quite possibly the police will be called, though I am not sure of the last point. In any event you are opening yourself to criminal acts and may end up in jail. This is fact not something I have written to scare you, though I hope it concerns you enough to get help ASAP.

Your GP is the best starting point. He/she will know what you need. You may not need another drug. It depends on what you are taking, how much and how long you have been using. You can get help at drug rehab centres or see a psychiatrist plus any other avenues your GP may suggest. Your conversation with your GP is confidential, unless you intend to permanently harm yourself, so no one will come knocking at your door for the moment.

There are drugs which can help you get over the addiction. Perhaps this is a question for your GP. I know of people who are prescribed one of these, not allowed to write the name, who go to their local pharmacy to take the drug under supervision. This may be an option for you. I cannot give any definite answer on the use of counter drugs as I am not a medical practitioner.

Please see your GP ASAP and start the recovery process. Write in here for support.
