Doctor was no help

Arthurly

Hi all.

After struggling with this that seems for years, I finally plucked up the courage to admit that I had a problem, and needed help. That was a big thing for me.

My friends and family have been very supportive, but I really don't want to bog them down. They have their own problems to deal with.

So I went to the Doctor who confirmed I had depression. He suggested I contact a therapist and gave me some phone numbers. He also suggested I go private, and his main concern that the info would be on record. So I contacted the therapist, who was then concerned that I wasn't on medicare and suggested I go back to the Doctor.

I did that and the Doctor once again convinced me not to go on Medicare. I went back to the therapist who convinced me again that I should be on Medicare.

I have given up. All I wanted was some help and I feel like I have been kicked from pillar to post.

So looks like I'l have to go cold turkey. This is shit.

Is there ANYWHERE I can just go for help?

I live in Southern Sydney area.

Dear Arthurly~

Welcome here to the Forum. You have hit a big snag, however it would be a real pity to give up now. Really the hard part is firstly recognizing you have an illness like depression and secondly trying to get the proper help.

While I can understand both the doctor and the therapist's views I think both are missing the point. You are ill and need treatment. Here on the Forum we are unable to suggest any area-specific services. I'd suggest trying firstly our 24/7 Help Line on 1300 22 4636 who may be able advise you.

Other than that try:

At the very least try some other doctor.

It is very frustrating and disheartening to be stalled by what must seem a bureaucratic problem. While not having treatment for a mental illness recorded in your history might be a good thing it is after all getting you to a better life that is important.

Trying to soldier on alone - going cold turkey - is not a realistic thing to do. I simply go worse until I had the appropriate treatment.

Please let us know how you get on

Hey Arthurly and welcome to BB 🙂

Croix has made some excellent points.

I think what you need is a mental health plan (MHP) - which your GP can organise for you. This allows Medicare to pay a contributionn towards your psychologist/psychiatrist bills - this is what I believe that the psychologist was mentioning. The GP has to fill in the form and forward it to the psychologist.

If you have the funds, you can self refer to a Psychologist - just make sure they are a practising CLINICAL psychologist - that’s not for Medicare benefit, that type are best placed to help you.

I’m really sorry that you’ve had the run around.

This is now your space to talk on the BB forums, anonymously and safely.

Please do get back to us, we’d like to know how you’re doing, cheers M 🙂

hi Arthurly, I'd like to welcome you and feel very sorry for how you are feeling.
The big question is 'are you frightened about being on record', for work issues or insurance policies because none of this have been mentioned.
I'd like to hear back from you before I continue. Geoff.

No Geoff, I don't have an issue as all medical records are confidential. It was just such a big let down because it was so hard for me to go and ask for help. I feel now like I can't go back. But I know I will need help.

I really feel for you , ive been to several doctors without much help ended up asking for a referral to a psychiatrist thinking they might help more. if it helps any the therapist may be recommending medicare so you pay less. I pay a private psychologist $73 and get a rebate so only cost me about $13 out of pocket. This is usually for a shortish visit more for a longer visit.

It still astounds me sometimes at how bad the mental health system can be. Don’t give up

Dear Arthurly~

It is very hard to go ask for help, I had to write it down and give over the paper as I was embarrassed, frightened and mixed up.

It was worth it in my case, and I am sure it will be in yours - in fact you do agree, you said "I know I will need help"

So please don't let this difficulty set you back. As I mentioned if you don't think going back to the existing personnel is a good option please go somewhere else. Trying to find sympathetic capable medical personnel is not always straightaway, it can take a degree of determination. I've had both a doctor and a psychologist who I've held in very low esteem and left.

Please let us know how you get on

Hi Arthurly

It certainly seems like things have gotten off to a bad start for you.

Ok … so lets just get back to basics. The main and most important thing is that you get the care you need for your depression.

There are 2 major ways that depression is treated in the community setting
1. with medications ( usually via a GP , sometimes a psychiatrist)
2. with counselling (usually from a psychologist )

Most people try counselling first, and if that isn’t successful on its own, they are advised it add in medication. If depression is severe, some start both right from the beginning.

Ok .. So lets just go over getting into therapy:
You can go
1. via a GP who writes a Mental Health Plan for you . This means that you get 6 visits with a psychologist that will attract a medicare rebate ( making it cheaper for you!) You can then get a review with the GP and get another 4 , so a total of 10 per calendar year.
2. get a referral from GP to a psychologist but instead of claiming via Medicare , you claim via your private Health fund extras ( if you have that)
3. Go to the psychologist and pay the bill but don't claim from either Medicare OR your private health fund ( expensive way to go!)

Different people like different options for various reasons …

I just suggest you chose the one that works for you. In my experience most people go with option 1 as it is often the cheapest and most dont have extras cover anyway.

(There has been some issues around having to declare visits to a therapist on life insurance forms and premiums going up so some people have not wanted to have any “record” on their Medicare file of visits … but this is not a common issue.)

Dont let any of red tape put you off getting what you need - a good and trained health professional to guide you to better health.
