Hello Oceanentity, a good question but not an easy one to answer because it depends on the situation and the surrounding circumstances.
There are different techniques to change the thoughts, feelings and many ways to try and train your thoughts in a positive direction.
Each professional counsellor and/or therapist have their own ability to help those suffering from anxiety and depression.
Desensitisation or exposure therapy can be used to treat people suffering from OCD, which is an illness I have had for a long time.
Cognitive behaviour is a type of treatment that helps individuals cope with and change problematic thoughts, behaviours.
It can be used to help many people on other issues as well.
Good thread.
Geoff.

Hi oceanentity,
Thank you for your post. I have lots of experiences with CBT but everyone is a bit different and there's no two experiences or therapists that are the same.
For me, I'm not sure that it was a 'breakthrough', but I did find it very very helpful. There's lots of things involved in CBT that can be anything from looking at and reframing automatic negative thoughts to conquering different types of fears and phobias. While I'm not doing CBT now (I'm doing different types of therapy), I still think about it and use a lot of the techniques that I was taught. It's an ongoing practice.
I hope this helps a little - if you have any questions I'd be open to sharing more. Hopefully you get some good feedback here. You can also type CBT up the top in the search to find other conversations about this therapy too.
