SLEEP

Hi All,

In the past there may have been threads on sleep and how to improve our quality of sleep.

I am starting this thread up and hope to include past thread titles.

For some of us sleep is a real issue, the more we can learn about it the better informed we will be.

Funny stories on weird places you have fallen asleep are welcome as well.

For me, I had just moved house and was very busy getting everything organised. Friends invited me to the drag races. I was so tired and exhausted that I sat down, leant against the fence right near the starting line and fell asleep for most of the evening.

Hope to read some of your stories and tips.

Cheerio for now, from Mrs. Dools

Rob actually gave many people a key to get a good sleep.....and I will quote;

" I think the most helpful thing was when I stopped trying to control my sleep and just went with it"

Nice1.....This does work..

Hey Mrs Dools

I dont like double posting but just some 'sleep' info for you...

I was on my old PC Sunday night....signed off after a couple of posts and made a mistake....I went straight from this screen to bed....It didnt work. Way too much tossing and turning....took me ages to get to sleep....

I wont be doing that again in a hurry....I should have known better

Great thread Mrs Dools 🙂

Kind Thoughts

Paul

Hi Paul,

Maybe if we had sound on this thread I could have sung you a lullaby until you fell to sleep. Actually no, maybe someone else singing a lullaby might have worked!

When I was running a Playgroup, part of my duties included singing songs with the parents and children. One day while running the crèche, one of the young girls asked me to stop singing as I was hurting her ears! Ha. Ha. I thought that was hilarious.

I told the boss but she insisted I kept on singing to the children...even if I did hurt their ears.

Or maybe we could have sheep running across the screen jumping fences or crawling under them. You could count the sheep until you fall asleep!

Hope you manage to have a better night's sleep soon Paul!

Cheers from Mrs. Dools

While Googling SLEEP the following popped up on the screen:

Ways to get better sleep

Sleep logs

Emotion Regulation sheets

(and my favourite)

4th Grade Math Worksheet

(it was all about fractions...I would have had mental exhaustion after trying to work those out!)

Why do these random things pop up under a different topic?

Hey Mrs Dools

4th grade Math Worksheet..lol...I will have a bo-peep at the others though.

I sleep like a log....I often post on BB that using anything with a screen just before going to bed just doesnt work..The TV is okay...but phone..PC...Laptop..ipads... tablets will only increase brain activity...

I was dumb enough to stay on here and go straight to bed...never works...

I actually find that Robs Chooks jumping through fences can have a very therapeutic effect 😉

I think your voice would be just fine Mrs Dools 🙂 Once we can talk with headphones and a mike!

Thanks for your help xx........Paul

Hi Paul,

I had a little laugh to myself when I read your post. My mobile phone is that old it doesn't have a screen that does more than show me people's phone numbers!

Tablets increasing brain activity! Oh yes, you mean electronic tablet thingys! Not medication "tablets!" Who on earth decided to call them Tablets!

Tonight instead of counting sheep I will be counting Rob's chooks! Ha. Ha.

I picked up a book all about SLEEP from the library today so I will have a read of that and pass on interesting information.

Cheers for now from Mrs. Dools

Hi All,

While I was at a hairdressers with a client today, I picked up a magazine and randomly found a page on SLEEP! Apparently there is a:

-Free Podcast called "Sleep with me" by Drew Ackerman, where you can hear stories read to you in a monotone voice which apparently is so boring that it send you to sleep. (Just like myself and Paul have been chatting about. You can find this at: sleepwithmepodcast.com

I have no idea what a podcast is!

- Dr. Michael Brues has put together "The Sleep Doctors Diet Plan" One thing he suggests is to start with 300 and count backwards in 3s. So that would be 300, 297, 294 and so on.

(I don't know if that would put me to sleep or not. Think my brain would be so over worked that I wouldn't sleep for hours. Ha. Ha.)

- Dr. Arlene Unger suggests that you snack on cherries or have a glass of tart cheery juice before you go to bed. Cherries are apparently rich in melatonin which is know as a natural sleep aid.

Dr. Arlene Unger also has a book titled Sleep: 50 Mindfulness and relaxation exercises for a restful Night.

A few more ideas regarding sleep that people might like to investigate.

I'm about to have a nice warm shower, grab a book and head off to bed. Maybe I should read it out loud to myself in a monotone voice while drinking cherry juice!

Good Morning Mrs Dools

I am happy that you had a laugh when you read my post 🙂

Mrs Dools Said: "My mobile phone is that old it doesn't have a screen that does more than show me people's phone numbers!"

I am 56 and have the latest Sony Xperia Z5....I dont really care about keeping up with technology anymore as its still an 'electronic dog collar' to me...I use it only as a phone and for internet connectivity...

Thankyou for your latest updates on 'SLEEP'....as I mentioned above I do sleep well but....I need all the info I can get to so I can learn more on an ongoing basis 🙂

Good evening Mrs Dools. I have recently commenced an on-line mindfulness course, and one of the things it has covered is sleeplessness or insomnia. I have put some tips here for all to digest, which I hope may be helpful to people here. I know many of the tips are duplicated elsewhere on this thread, but it could be helpful to have all of them together. (-:

Tips for Improving Sleep
1. Make sure all your immediate needs are met before you get into bed and try to sleep. Ensure you are not hungry, cold, worried about a crooked blind, need to go the the toilet, forgot to set the alarm clock, etc.
2. Where ever possible, go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time every morning. Do
not sleep late in the mornings trying to make up for lost sleep. This just doesnt work.
3. Do not take naps during the day. All this does is upset your already disturbed sleep pattern.
4. Set aside time for problem solving during the day. You dont want to go to bed with all your problems still churning through your head.
5. Do not lie in bed awake or worrying for long periods of time. If you cannot sleep, get out of bed and do something distracting, but not too stimulating. Try listening to classical music or reading a book. Only return to bed when you are feeling sleepy again.
6. Do not use alcohol to help you sleep. It may assist you in getting to sleep initially, but wont keep you asleep.
7. Avoid caffeine in the evenings, and preferably restrict consumption of caffeine to mornings only.
8. Do not smoke for at least an hour before going to bed.
9 Sleeping pills do not provide a long-term solution to chronic sleeping problems. Speak to your GP about coming off these, or at least reducing your reliability on them.
10. Try to reduce noise levels by closing windows and doors, or use ear plugs if noise is unavoidable.
11. Regular exercise during the day or early evening can improve sleeping patterns. If you do exercise regularly however, do not exercise late in the evening as it will likely make it more difficult for you to get to sleep.
12. Develop a short and relaxing routine that you do every night before going to bed - eg washing your face, cleaning your teeth, taking the dog out for a toilet break, etc. Routines help you to wind down and gets you in the “mood” for sleep.

Sleep well ............

Sherie xx

Thanks Sherie,

That is an excellent list. It would be great if we could keep adding to that list, but I don't think it is possible with this kind of thread.

I read a little more on the computer about sleep and in the book I am reading, so I will share that later.

It is great to have input and feedback here. Thanks everyone!

Cheers from Mrs. Dools
