Detox diet

Gday, i have been on various medications for five years. I have started to tapper off meds as they just were Not working & i had bad side effects, almost fatal . I have changed my diet to a paleo/keto/raw style diet, i really didnt think i could but it has been great for my mental health, i thought i’d share my meal plan & gut health plan, it really helps.

Gut health- in my research i have found that 85-90% of seritonin is produced in the gut, this has been a game changer for me. Probiotics- Yakult, kombucha( trust me you get used to the taste haha) kimchi, etc etc all are good ways to start. Also bone broth or vege broth is a good way to repare the gut lining.

Carbs - this was the hardest thing for me to give up- pasta, rice, potato’s etc yum! Haha, but there is plenty of really good recipes out there, pete evans is pretty swiched on, we got some ideas from him but there is lots of good food that assist in helping mental health.

i will post a typical weeks meals that my wife and I are both eating, this has really helped us & we are both loosing weight too : )

Hi Zephyr360,

Thank you for your post. I'm so glad to hear the tapering is going well and it sounds like you have found so much value in learning about nutrition and how that's impacted your mental health. I'm really happy for you 🙂

I just want to say though there is a bit of controversy with Pete Evans methods, and well - we do need carbs in our diet. I can send you a ton of research articles but I'll just copy paste this bit. While I do understand that it is working for you I think it's really important to try and get evidence-based information where you can. If you decide to stick with what you're eating then I don't blame you whatsoever, but maybe this info might be helpful for the others who click on this post.

I hope you don't mind that I'm sharing this even if it clashes a bit with what you are deciding. With all this said I'm still very much keen on getting some meal ideas!

Consumption of diets low in carbohydrate tends to precipitate depression, since the production of brain chemicals serotonin and tryptophan that promote the feeling of well being, is triggered by carbohydrate rich foods. It is suggested that low glycemic index (GI) foods such as some fruits and vegetables, whole grains, pasta, etc. are more likely to provide a moderate but lasting effect on brain chemistry, mood, and energy level

Hi Zephyr,

Thank you, thank you and thanks again for making this thread! I am excited that someone has put a spotlight on food used for mental health management and healing. I would never advocate for people to stop taking AD's if they work for them but it has always annoyed me that GP's grab the script pad and off we go with the medication instantly before diet is even mentioned, if it is even mentioned at all. Good food can be so powerful for good mental health.

At one stage of my long battle with panic attacks, I was waking at 4am every morning with severe anxiety, shaking uncontrollably and vomiting , it was awful. I began to force myself to eat a big breakfast, as big as I could (it took some discipline, I have never eaten breakfast in my life) it consisted of a small breakfast steak, eggs, grainy toast and cup of spinach. I swear, within half an hour after eating I didn't feel so panicky. Blood sugars and hormones balance out after lots of protein in the morning. So much better than reaching for an anti anxiety pill that's for sure. Who would have thought a mere protein packed breakfast could be such a powerful anti anxiety tool, but it is!

I am looking forward to seeing some of your food ideas on this thread. I am trying to implement this way of eating in my life at the moment also, I am winning then failing but I am determined to try my best. Grateful to you for sharing this and keep up the good work.

Kindest thoughts

Thanks for replys : )

we have cheat nights, friday pasta night, sunday fried rice or potato bake. Honestly when we wake up after a cheat night we feel starving, craving more carbs and a little bit cranky haha. I have wondered once i start a more active exercise routine i might need more carbs, at this stage carbs just make me more anxious, as im not burning the sugars they create in the body.

I will put up some more detailed recipes & keep updating as i improve.

Everybody has a different chemical makeup, but this is really working for my brain haha bloody brain hahaha ; )

Hi, I am all for improving mental health with what food we eat. Nutritional medicine I think it's called.

I know a little about paleo and keto and quite a bit about eating raw foods. I do eat raw plant foods, well try to. I eat mostly whole food plant based. Which by doing so I have noticed much improvement in mental and physical health. The thing similar to all these ways of eating I think, is one does not eat any refined sugar, hardly any processed foods or crap take aways. I noticed huge improvements cutting out these crap foods

As I do not eat animal foods, I try to eat beans, lentils, chickpeas, tofu. I don't eat dairy,so will make cheese sauces out of raw cashews, drink almond milk, soy milk and hoping to try some oat milk soon.

I also eat seeds, well I do try. I make those chia puddings using chia seeds. I am trying to use more flaxseeds on smoothies. I also like tahini which is made from sesame seeds. I eat all types of nuts. Though not a lot, as they are too calorie dense for me.

I eat all vegetables and all different kinds of fruits. I am loving organic grapes at the moment.

I also eat oats, quinoa and a bit of brown basmati rice.

Anyway I love the fact that you see a connection to what you eat and your mental health. I am not sure every does. But it has improved mine. In fact when I slipped and ate refined junk food chocolate, I felt worse
