Hi all,

This discussion is a space for all members to share suggestions and ideas to improve the Forums. This can be anything. Navigation, notifications, topics and themes, moderation, community rules, or something else!

We'd love to hear about what you think we can do better. We are really grateful to everyone who has contributed their ideas already, and we're always keen to hear more.

Kind regards,

Sophie M

Hi Paul
I’m sorry that you haven’t been around much on the forums—you are such a great contributor and source of wisdom. I hope everything and everyone in your world is okay. You know we are always here for you.

Yes, the concern was related to diminished privacy in connection with the forced introduction (no opt out provided) of public profiles. In effect, this means everything a community member has ever written is collated in one place and made public. And this increases others’ accessibility and eases of access to our personal information.

Several community members expressed the same concern.

Unfortunately, the issue wasn’t raised in the initial round of consultations, but when it was raised bb took the time to look at the issue.
From my perspective It was quite an important issue in terms of trust, and acknowledging the need to sensitively protect the personal information we readily share through bb to help others that isn’t necessarily protected by legislation but never-the-less personal.
I hope this helps you to better understand the issue.
Kind thoughts to you

Thanks Sophie for and summer rose I must admit I'm so slow and Confused that I didn't even though the such a facility let alone know how to use it.

Summer rose I am glad you are pleased with the outcome.

Thanks Quirky. And you are certainly not slow! Anything but!!

If it makes you feel any better I still can’t find new posts or understand the notifications!

Kind thoughts to you

Hi Summer Rose

Thankyou for taking the time to provide support and for your kind words too

Now it makes sense....I did look at a couple of profiles when the new platform was launched and it was relatively basic. I didnt know that our own posts were collated and available for perusal at the time

That would have been (is) somewhat disturbing to me. I really appreciate the 'heads up' on this matter

You mentioned ' It was quite an important issue in terms of trust, and acknowledging the need to sensitively protect the personal information we readily share through bb to help others that isn’t necessarily protected by legislation but never-the-less personal'

Thankyou for your understanding and the TLC you provide to members on our National platform SR  😊

Paul

Hello Summer Rose, thanks for your explanation, I just wish whether or not we were allowed to accept if we wanted other Champions to read our profile.

Each person should be entitled to make this decision.

Hi Geoff

I totally understand what you’re saying about wanting to exercise personal choice about whether or not a Community Champion can access our profiles.

I will leave it to bb to explain their decision. If it helps though, here are my thoughts on their decision.

Firstly, rightly or wrongly, I do assess the risk of a CC abusing this privileged access to be quite low given they are bb “ambassadors” and bound by the terms and conditions associated with their role. If an abuse ever did occur, the matter could be quickly dealt with through a “report post”.

At the same time, I can see a safety benefit. CCs are on the front line providing support, so access to this information could help them to spot someone in real trouble in real time, spiralling down for example. To me, the safety of community members must always be our paramount concern.

In addition, I think given bb has created the role of a CC the organisation needs to support these kind, courageous and giving people to do their best possible job. And we all need to respect CCs and support them too because they help make our forums a better place.

Balancing privacy, safety and provision of best possible support—it’s a tough one for sure.

Please know, Geoff, that I understand I am only one person here and there will be many views  on bb’s decision. I respect that you feel differently and have the deepest admiration for your tireless commitment to the forum and advocacy to see it continually improve.

Kind thoughts to you

Hello Summer Rose, I really appreciate your understanding, and thank you.

Am I the only one finding it increasingly frustrating that on each discussion (thread) the very first post is always at the top of each page... it's annoying & I can't find it serving any useful purpose... if someone is interested they can always start at page one to learn about the reasons the poster started their discussion (thread)... peoples journey changes... I don't need to see it every time I want to reply to someone... I want to see what they are dealing with now.

Could we please have this changed

Hi everyone,

Thanks for sharing this feedback, Geoff. We can hear that you’d like to have more control over who can see your profile page within the small group of Beyond Blue staff and volunteers who are able to use this feature. It’s not something we’re able to set up currently, as forums staff and volunteers need to able to view the extra context in order to ensure we’re supporting members as best as we can.

Thank you, Summer Rose, for such a fair and thoughtful response here. You’re absolutely correct in saying that the Community Champions are doing incredible work, and are acting as part of Beyond Blue when sharing, supporting and communicating here.

The Community Champions team are a set of dedicated volunteers who are supported to share their lived experience as part of the Beyond Blue forums. To be a part of this program they complete interviews, monthly supervision, a police check, and a Working with Children check. This team are also supported by Beyond Blue staff to ensure they are safe when engaging with the forums. This extensive program leads to a team of dedicated, informed and safe volunteers. As an organisation we place our trust in this team with some additional functionality within the forums - including the ability to view user profiles. We have made this choice to ensure that the heart of the program - championing support and hope - is best served.

If there is anything further you would like to discuss we would welcome that conversation via modsupport@beyondblue.org.au so we can best address your concerns.

Kind regards,

Sophie M

Thanks Paws, for mentioning the annoyance about how the first post of Discussions is always at the top of the page. I've been trying to quickly skip past them, to get to the latest post, & I know, when the initial post was a long post, like mine was, it takes up a rather large bit of screen area, & the scroll down takes more scrolling.

Sometimes, when I thought I could benefit from reading the first post, I had done, & would be happy to continue to use the page nav & go directly to the beginning of the Discussion. I do't need to seet the initail post up there either.

Except - when I'm unfamiliar with a Discussion, & the initial post provides me with more info than the title, & points to what the author of the Discussion wanted to talk about when when they created the Discussion.

*

I was hoping all members would have control over their own profile page. I hope, one day, that can happen. In the meantime, I would have liked to be able to simply ask for permission from members, knowing how some won't want me 'snooping'. If a member didn't reply to my question, I would assume they don't want me viewing their profile, & I won't. If they answer I could follow their wishes. Members having control, when treated with respect, & I acknowledge this way I would like to deal with this issue requires us to trust eachother as well.

The decision to restrict access may result in my not being able to relocate some Discussion I was or wanted to participate in, because I may well have forgotten the title, to enter into the Search thingy insteadd. I'll have to find the member somewhere else, in another Discussion, & cut in to try to ask them what the title of a Discussion was, or where to find. etc. That's my reason for even wanting to view someone's profile - & maybe to see if they are very new to the forums, buy noting they have not created more than their Introduction Discussion. That has verified this fact a couple times, which was very helpful to me, when it comes to replyinto their post.
