Reading peoples  stories here and seeing common isdues in cities. I livevin the Blue Mountains in an area with one mobile tower so we have less electromagmetic freqencies syrrounding us. My family live in sydney and i have come to realise that the real anxiety i experience when i come down to sydey is not just about seeing family but more about wading through the soup of wifi bluetooth mobike towers and al  the other freqyencies in cities. They are everwhere but staying overnight in sydney has me sleepless anxious and upset and seeking help online here on this great site. I think many of the people here are exoeriencing real problems from outward sources. Its not all internal people! What can we do? We can do a lot. ...

Hello EMF, thank you for your opinion. I can assure you my problems are real, and it would be safe to say so are most people who come here. I hope you're not suggesting that depression is not a real thing unless it is caused by an external factor.  I am old enough to remember when cellphones and internet weren't around and I was still suffering.  Conspiracy theories help no one.

Hello

I have wondered about that myself. Because depression and other mental issues do seem more common these days. Like illness in the brain like even dementia. I find myself asking why, is it diet related, is it environmental factors like you mentioned. I think you thoughts are quite valid, and you think outside the box and I like that. Good on you

Is it more common though, or are we simply talking about it more? Beyond Blue has only been around a little over ten years, and forums like these. You never heard about domestic violence when i was growing up, but no one believes that it never happened.

Hi EMF

It's great you raised the topic of Electromagnetic Fields and whether they affect us and how the idea of visiting Sydney metro causes anxiety and whether it is a cause of depression.

If we were to turn off all of the EMF producing equipment on the planet OFF, there would still be electromagnetic fields - the sun generates an EMF, distant space phenomena product EMF's that land on the planet all the time. Sure, they aren't as local as the ones that we rely on for communication.

An electromagnetic field is a form of radiation, but it differs vastly to harmful radiation because it doesn't transform the DNA in our body. The worst thing that communications EMF would do if you were close enough is cause a burn, but the towers that generate and receive these fields and signals are placed far enough away from people and dwellings that once the signal reaches anyone it's extremely weak and does nothing to the water in our bodies. (These signals only have an effect on the water in our bodies)

Yes, our brain runs on electricity, but this is through special paths and the tiny amount of EMF that is around has no effect on us.

When assessing dangers of EMF and other technology and approaching from an angle of concern we've got to look at evidence first.  JessF said that she has had depression before mobile phone towers, WiFi, Bluetooth and I'm assuming microwave ovens. I know plenty of people who live in Melbourne and Sydney who don't have depression. And there are plenty of people in the country where there is very little mobile coverage who suffer from depression. It looks like there is no pattern that draws a correlation between depression and EMF.

It would be great if there was a correlation because we could make our homes a faraday cage and live in an EMF free zone and be shielded from depression, but alas, I don't think that would work 😞

I like to thank goodness there are mobile towers, microwave trunk links, wireless internet links etc so that we can come together on here and talk about the difference between harmless non-ionising radiation (eg EMF) and harmful ionising radiation (eg UV-A and UV-B rays from the sun) - which is repeatedly proven to cause harm.

Wear sunscreen, enjoy technology 🙂

Hi Shelley anne

I wonder if we are seeing a higher incidence these days because we are evolving as a people to better recognise illnesses and life is becoming a bit more complex. Also I wonder if it's because mental illness was so frowned upon and stigmatised in the past that no one dare say they felt hopeless and empty for fear of being institutionalised and zapped. Or even killed in biblical times.

Now we celebrate that people can come forward and express themselves.

I wonder if anyone has the real evidence - the data on this.

Sorry JessF - I just repeated what you said in my post without realising you had already said it.
