Finding help

Hey there, Ive been fighting the fight for around 10 years now and im at the end of being able to carry it on and I need help.I looked over the website and the first suggestion was to see my GP, I have discussed this with him and he was not too interested in going further with it, I think hes overworked or just an idiot, im not sure.

I dont know what to do next, I have no job or money, so where do I go and who do I see for help?

Hi Kess and welcome,

Ten years is a bloody long time to have been trying to cope without medical support so it is really positive to hear you are open to reaching out to a doctor.

Your GP's response was infuriatingly useless though... Unfortunately it happens to many of us. I think you have it right thinking this doctor is not the one for you.

Is seeking another opinion possible in your area? It can help to check the websites of your medical centre and see if any doctors list an interest in mental health care. Or receptionists can often give you an idea of the best doctor to visit.

Waiting for a doctor to help can be difficult when you're feeling exhausted so I'm glad you've come here to talk too. These forums aren't immediate but you can join in wherever feels helpful to you. Hopefully knowing you're not alone helps even slightly. Do you have support offline from friends or family?

While you were checking out the website did any of the phone lines appeal to you? I have used them in the past to get through times where it all feels too much. If you wanted to use these they are another option to try.

You wrote that you feel like you're heading towards being at risk and I wondered whether you had considered visiting the emergency room if it gets to a point you need urgent support? In a similar place mentally I had never considered this as an option but it is a good place to go if you feel unsafe. Sometimes even sitting in the ER and knowing you are physically safe can help.

I hope you can try again and the next GP is able to help. It is so hurtful when you reach out and feel ignored or disregarded. If you want to keep talking people here are listening.

Thanks Nat, I will call the centers(theres 3 in the area) tomorrow when they open, armed with your advice about a more appropriate GP.

As for the risk, the thought has crept into my mind at times over the years, but my partner and not wanting to hurt her far outweighs and squashes it quite quickly, and its her that I want to get better for, for too long she has put up with my dead lifless husk and it cannot continue.

Hi Kess and thank you for returning to post again.

I'm glad to hear you're going to keep trying. Someone on here posted once about throwing a tantrum until the doctors listen and pay attention and it made me laugh in a sad sort of way because it felt so bloody true. It isn't always easy to be heard. But what matters most is to keep trying.

I'm glad to hear you have a loving partner. Do you feel able to open up with her much about how you're coping? You describe yourself as a lifeless husk and my goodness I can relate to that feeling. Thing is the people who care about us don't seem to see us that way even at our worst. Sometimes they feel helpless but don't know how to help.

Do you think asking your partner to come with you might help? At my lowest my husband kept making appointments and sending me back saying I don't care what they think... You're not ok. I wonder sometimes if I'd have gotten help earlier if he came with me.

Good luck tomorrow. I'd love to hear how you go if you want to share. By the way have you checked if your medical centre does online bookings (might help you snag an appointment).

Oh and I forgot to mention...booking a double appointment helps a lot. It gives you and the doctor more time which is so important with mental health discussions.

Fingers crossed tomorrow brings good news for you.

Nat
