Awaiting admission to private facility

Leel
Community Member

Hi

I got a referral from my GP today for admission to a private mental health facility. I have never been before and just the decision to go has been excruciating. Not even sure if I am sick enough to go.

i have anxiety, depression, social anxiety and panic disorder.

I have to wait until 9am to see whether there is a bed - the wait is awful. Just wondering if anyone knows if private facilities usually have wait times?

also, what should I expect there?

thank you

Hello Leel

Welcome to the forums and for reaching out too!

Yes...private facilities do have waiting times as they still have a limited number of people they can place

I used to have chronic anxiety for a long time.....yet its better now and only occasional anxiety issues except for the depression, anticipatory and social anxiety that are persisting...unfortunately

This would be a very difficult time for you Leel with anticipatory anxiety before finding out if there is a bed available for you

Can I ask if you have even a small support network?....(even one or two people) that you can talk to during this difficult time? I dont know what levels of anxiety you are experiencing and the effect they are having on your day to day well being Leel. I do understand what you are going through at this is my 37th year with various levels of anxiety/depression...and being on meds since 1996

You can expect caring health professionals that will help you help yourself to find some peace in your life Leel

Just a note...the forums are a safe and non judgemental place for you to post your thoughts or questions!

Can I ask how long you have been suffering from anxiety and depression? (only if thats okay of course)

my kind thoughts always Leel

Hello Leel, I agree with Paul that unfortunately, there is a wait time as I found out, simply because there is a limit as to how many people are allowed to be admitted.

People may have a tendency to believe that if they are diagnosed with any type of depression, and this list is quite extensive, that their illness may or may not be present, severe or not, in denial or not, that they don't need to be admitted, but if you have been concerned about any indication that any mental illness is developing, then be guided by what your doctor, the person who you trust, advises you.

If you want you can always get a second opinion if required, however, this could delay the help you may need.

Best wishes.

Geoff.

Dear Leel

Hello and welcome to the forum. It's good you have found your way here.

Mental health hospitals are like any hospital, they have limited bed space. Waiting for a few more hours seems forever but you will get an answer soon. If you cannot be admitted today ask when you can be admitted. Presumably all the paperwork has been done so it's a matter of waiting until a bed is available.

If your doctor believes you need to go to hospital then please take that advice. We all get a bit nervous about mental health admissions but you would not refuse to go to hospital with a different illness. The admission process will take a little time, just as in all hospitals. I expect you will be seen by a doctor, probably a psychiatrist, although hospitals like new patients to be examined by a medical doctor as well.

After talking with the psychiatrist you will be given a program of activities. How often you will see the psych, what other activities to attend, possibly write about yourself. It all depends on the psych and your needs. Nothing very difficult or to be scared of. The staff are focussed on helping you to get well.

I wish you well and hope you gain great benefit from your stay.

Thank you Paul.

i was diagnosed just under 2 years ago and my medication has stopped working. I feel nauseous and have chest pains and light headedness. I simply can’t concentrate. I just slept for the first time in over 28 hours. I have to go to the bathroom several times before I can even leave the house.

im irritable, angry, crying at nothing and am not the wife or mother I need to be.

i have a good network of people.

i am so tired of feeling this way and worrying over everything.

Thanks Geoff.

I do often feel like I am making this up and that I should just “be more positive” as some of my friends try to say to me. I used to be such a high achiever and high functioning and now I feel less than adequate to even decide what load of washing should even be put on next.

Thanks Mary for taking the time to respond.

unfortunately excessive worry is my thing. I am pretty decent at it.

Just so new to this process x

Hi Leel

I missed your post above on Jan 13....and there are many excessive worrier's on the forums including myself!

Being irritable...angry and oversensitised are all part of having a 'tired' mind..Again very common too. You have high expectations of yourself as a mum and wife which is also common as we set our standards so high we seem to have a long way to fall. You can only do so much at this time Leel!

We are here and listening 🙂

my kindest

Paul
