Taking my first steps to receive help

Hi everyone,

I've just recently decided that I can't keep sweeping my mental health issues under the rug and need to start taking action for a better quality of life. I have always found my anxiety and depression to be manageable and know that there are people out there in a far more severe struggle then I, which is why I had held off but now Im more curious about my health rather then feeling as though I should ignore it or just wait until tomorrow when hopefully it has calmed down and I'm back to "normal". The factor that has made me want to seek help is that I am just constantly feeling deflated, losing interest for things I have loved more then anything, low self esteem and a negative mental dialogue.

What were the first steps everyone has taken once deciding to seek help and do you have any advice? Should I just book an appointment with a psychologist who seems like I would gel with?

I often spent more time worrying about others and ignoring my own mental health or creating excuses and unjustified reasons why I may feel the way I do. I'm now finally in a headspace where I'm really excited to get help and see where it can lead me.

Please, if you feel like it share your stories with me or any advice you would give someone who is taking the next step in improving their mental health and wellbeing.

thanks

Hi Harry91,

Welcome to the forum and the community here. I really admire you for wanting to receive help and change your life around.

Usually I write very long messages, but I feel I will deal differently with my reply here. My suggestions to you would be:

-Google symptoms for depression and anxiety and look at the results objectively

-Note the symptoms you feel you experience. Or write down your own thoughts.

- Book a double appointment to see your Dr

- Take your list with you to the Dr and discuss how you are feeling openly and honestly, show him/her the list if necessary

- Ask the Dr for advice

- Request a referral for a psychologist

- You may be eligible for a Mental Health Care Plan which can allow you to have a reduce cost on your psychologist appointments, 6 to start with I believe and maybe up to 10. Some psychologists bulk bill, others still charge a gap even with a mental health care plan.

- Continue to research your conditions and find strategies that will work for you.

- If the going gets tough, don't give up. You may need to "sit" and rest a while and that is okay.

- Remind yourself that mental health issues are a medical condition and like all other medical conditions, we sometimes need help.

- While waiting for an appointment to see a psychologist, the Dr may be able to recommend some services on the internet you can access.

Wishing you well with your journey! Cheers from Dools
