Is it discrimination?

Hi all, I have a job which keeps me on a tight leash and strict set of guidelines by my code of conduct so cannot disclose particulars about my situation, however I need your help/opinion.

Today I was told by my employer that I need to 'get over and deal with some of my issues' in regards to my OCD and anxiety (which I am on medication and see a psychologist for). I was also told my students wellbeing comes well before my own, and their needs are more important than my own (in regards to my mental health).I ended up becoming a blubbering mess in my car driving home.

I understand where they are coming from, however when asked to meet unrealistic expectations which impacts directly on my job and state of mind, and then being told to just "deal with and get over some of your issues" when said employer knows you have OCD and anxiety.. I'm left wondering if I have any grounds to stand in this...

KatieJane, would your employer tell someone with cancer to get over their illness as it is impacting others? Wouldn't think so.

I think it is disgraceful to say things like to you.

You welfare is #1 and so it should be.

Is there someone at work in a Managerial position who you can discuss this with?

Hi KatieJane,

You seem to be in a job that carries big responsibilities for others who are under your care and this alone is something that could cause anxiety. From what you have posted you are working on improving your mental well being by getting support from your psychologist and taking medication. Keep up the good work to improve yourself.

No one should walk away from an employers feedback so low, although if they are in a high position there are ways to communicate to employees and bringing up someone's health issues when doing so in this way is not good.

Having worked with people who have been under my care does make me responsible for myself to follow all the policies and procedures of my workplace which i also feel there is a need to be opened to feedback good/bad from our fellow workers and seniors IN THE CORRECT MANNER. As MarkJT posted it could be helpful to share this with another worker who is a managerial position or a union position if this was done in an incorrect manner. This may help them approaching their communication in a different manner in the future. Maybe you could talk to this person about the expectations that are made on you as a worker and how it is impacting on yourself and people under your care to make some changes to better things for everyone.

Look after yourself and don't beat yourself up for the way someone has put forward the feedback [communication skills may need work].
