I get anxious thinking about talking about my enxiety

Hi I'm new here.

I'm a husband, a father of 2 kids

I am a 48 year old Male. And for the las 3 weeks or so my enxiety and depression but mainly my enxiety has be controlling my every moment of my life. If this wasn't bad enough, my paranoia and self-worth has been compromised. I haven't told my wife how I'm feeling. I think she has enough to deal with and I don't wanna add more to her plate. I've made an appointment with my gp next week to talk about whats currently going on and put in place strategies and maybe the possibility of seeing a psychologist. Currently I don't have strategies or plans to help me navigate this moments. I guess till now I thought I could do it alone. But having children changes everything and I want to and need to be some kind of normal if such thing exist for my family. Is true what they say that, for most men it's difficult to express this kind of feelings.

G'day 48Ggalan,

Thanks for sharing on beyondblue.

Expressing feelings gets easier with practice. Keep practicing.

Search for the "54321 technique" on google, you may find some counter to anxiety with that technique.

Another one is to pour all ones focus into an object, I use a led lenser p7 torch. So in the moments of anxiety, I take out the torch and feel it, noticing it's indentations, hardness, temperature, weight, colour and so on. I describe to myself what I am noticing about the torch. I'm told that technique is called "anchoring".

Thank you for your advice David. I will keep this in mind. It's just that sickening feeling of heart palpitations, knot in the stomach amongst others that mes me feel very vulnerable.

You're welcome 48Ggalan.

I totally know those heart palpitations! bang bang thump thump, feel it though my chest, don't even have to put my hand there to feel it. boom boom boom.

I get the wobbly legs with a tingle in my thighs, sometimes a hot sweat flush too, unpleasant stuff.

Deep slow breaths 6 seconds in, 6 seconds out, aiming to move the stomach/belly in breath rather than a chest movement breath. Abdominal breathing is more calming than chest breathing fyi.

We are courageous for acting when feeling anxiety. Yeh - it's the same kind of courage our grandfathers had in the wars, but a different circumstance.

Please if you can talk to your wife about the way you are feeling…… it may help her to understand you more…….

That’s great you are seeing a gp…… I highly recommend you do a mental health plan with your gp this will enable you to see a psychologist who can give you many strategies for your anxiety…….. it will really help….
