How to deal with anxiety at parties

On this weekend I have a Christmas party coming up. I get abit nervous at parties and there’s been a couple of times when I have nearly passed out at parties and other social events because I’m an introvert and loud talking and noises get a bit much because I get sinus headaches easily when there’s a lot of noise. There was a time at my aunt’s birthday party I started getting a really bad sinus headache because there were several people talking and the next minute I started seeing black cloudy spots. My aunt was aware of my dizzy spell so she walked me upstairs to the lounge room and told me to lie down for a bit. The second time I had a dizzy spell at a baby shower and I was nervous about passing out in front of people so I went to sit in the front yard alone. How do I deal with anxiety at parties?

Hello Kally jo,

Welcome...

I think you have in a way answered your own question..

I have anxiety when I’m out anywhere busy on my own...When it gets too much and I feel panicked settling in and I want to run away from the crowd and noises of people.....I do what you done on your 2nd anxiety/panic attack.....I find a quiet place away from people, breathe deeply to ground myself or use my grounding box....I have even had to go to the ladies rest room until I could calm myself.,,,

instructions on how to make them are in the Grounding thread ...just search....”Grounding What is and how do we”.....Their are also great suggestions and tips for keeping yourself grounded....if you to ask questions...please do...

Talk here anytime or on any thread if you feel up to it...

We are here for you..,you are definitely not alone..many members struggle with social anxiety....including me..

My kindest thoughts dear Kally jo..

Hello Kally, thanks for posting your comment and one way to overcome this problem is to be one of the first people to be present, then you can gradually meet the people that arrive after you, it's better than arriving when most of the guests are there, then you feel stuck as to who you want to talk to.

Another option is to slowly listen to a disc with noise, starting with barely a sound and increasing the volume so you become used to it, control your breathing from shallow and increasing to deep breathing as Grandy has said.

Anxiety at parties is not feeling comfortable but also check with your doctor about how to control these sinus headaches and another way is to go to shopping centres where many people are shopping and try and get used to the noise that's being made.

Take care.

Geoff.

Hi Kally,

Thank you for being so open here. I can see that going to parties is difficult for you.

I am also an introvert and dislike parties. Usually, I just go on my phone and sit in a quiet place for a bit until I am ready to speak to people. Everyone has different ways of coping.

You mentioned going outside helps you. Keep doing that whenever you feel overwhelmed.
