well, hello there!

I'm suffering from depression since I was young. Tried to kill myself but chicken out back then. Been coping with my depression for decades. I think I'm suffering from ADHD and some anxiety issues. Been trying to get a hold of a psychiatrist but I couldn't find one that accept new referrals. Tried to speak to a psychologist but felt more like being judge, so I just agreed to everything they say and shut myself. Feeling stuck now but hey, at least I have you guys right?

Nice to meet ya'll.

Hello Dashi, thanks for introducing yourself and for posting your comment.

Some psychiatrists and/or psychologists have a full list of people so they can't take on any new patients but that's not to say you shouldn't keep trying or ask your doctor to specially ask one of them that you do need help, coming from a doctor certainly helps.

The first appointment is not easy as they have to try and find out the reason why you have made an appointment, so questions may be asked that you don't agree with, one way to overcome this is by writing down what has been a problem and all the other concerns, try and do this in point form, this makes it easier for them to quickly read through the points.

This will help get over all those questions, then they may offer a diagnosis and if they are able to prescribe medication, although psychologists can't do this.

Pleased you have joined.

Geoff.

Hi Dashi

Welcome to the bb forum. Thank you for sharing your story.

I’m sorry to hear about your long term struggle with depression and current challenges finding the right help. I know things are tough for you right now. Hugs to you.

I really want to encourage you to persevere in your quest to find a suitable mental health practitioner. It’s a lot of effort, I know, but with the right treatment recovery from depression is possible. It can get better.

If you call the bb support line they can help you talk it through and identify possible local practitioners. Your GP is also a really good source of information and support.

Please post any time. I find communicating on this forum is really helpful. Everyone here “gets” mental health and tries their best to offer compassionate non-judgmental support.

Kind thoughts to you

Hi Dashi,

Thank you for sharing your story, and yes, you have our support.

You mentioned that you THINK you're suffering from ADHD, have you been diagnosed? Because to my knowledge, ADHD can't be self-diagnosed, maybe you just have some habits that look similar. The treatment will be completely different. Ever if you're diagnosed ADHD, there're also several types of treatment, and you will need to find out together with your psychologist specialized at ADHD (not all psychologist can handle this), which one is the best matching treatment (you will attend the decision making, not just your psychologist).

So my suggestion is that, if you're not diagnosed, ask your GP to refer you a specialist who's eligible to do the ADHD assessment. Or, you can google places that can do ADHD assessment around your area and then return to your GP for referral. It may take months to wait but you can at least start this process.

Hope everything will be better and better.

Mark
