Year 12

Hi. I’ve been getting 50-60% on my assessments for term 1 I’m in year 12. I have gotten 30% in legal and 50% in English advanced, 40% in maths standard, 50% in modern history, 70% in biology for term 2. I really want an ATAR that is at least 80-90, and I want to do criminology alongside with forensics. I do so many curricular activities at school so it’s been tough on me. I don’t think my goal for 80-90 ATAR is possibile anymore, and now I’m scared because I will end up being a disappointment at this rate

Hi, thankyou for a well written post that is clear.

I'd like to ask you- who would feel you are a disappointment? Yourself, parents, teachers?

I have a saying- "your best is good enough" But in terms of seeking a certain profession your best might not reach the grade you have, it might be your best but it isnt realistic to continue to strive for something not achievable.

I joined the AirForce at 17yo and sadly I didnt have a plan B. So when I left 3 years later I had no plans on what to do. My only ticket to getting work was my service record and a commendation for a relief effort. This meant I went from profession to profession with no real qualifications.

So may I suggest looking at the criminology/forensics professions and seeking a profession that aids these jobs? Eg a scientist might have an assistant scientist. A criminologist- there might be work in a prison that is less in terms of qualifications (I worked in a jail once). What about seeking work in a jail and doing part time criminology studies? What I'm suggesting is to do an investigation of those fields to establish what lines of work you would be capable of achieving with less educational goals or levels. Unfortunately goals in terms of professions are ok but they dont take into account the abilities of the student if they have the capability to succeed to the level of education required.

The above puts an enormous strain on you mentally. The only way I can see you remaining in your current situation is if you drop some other activities and plough through your studies and projects with 100% commitment.... if you have the capacity to achieve it. I've known students that fill every second night with sports or games and not give 100?"% to their education.

I hope I've clarified things for you. Dont be afraid to seek a professional at your uni to gain another opinion.
