Out of breath- unsure if anxiety related

Hey guys

I was diagnosed with anxiety about a year ago and have had several panic attacks and anxiety attacks etc so I know the symptoms. Occasionally, but more often lately, I get really tight in the chest and I feel as though I have to take really deep breaths to get air. When this happens I don't feel anxious, and it isn't the same as when I've been really anxious or panicky before. Does this happen to anyone else? Do you think it's to do with my anxiety or is it something else?

Thanks 🙂

Hi Tazza261,

Thank you for your post, it must be hard for you to live like this, I have had some experience with anxiety and panic attacks and I have seen it with the person that I care for, it is very scary and unsettling. I would suggest you talk to your GP or send a message to our DR Kim on BB, as I am not qualified to really give a diagnosis. To me, it sounds like a panic attack and you trying to take deep breaths shows that you are trying to calm yourself down. Have you noticed any particular triggers when this is happening to you ? Have you tried BB 'smiling minds' app, its awesome for mindfulness. You can call us on 1300 22 4636 or lifeline 13 1114 but I think you should see a GP and maybe get a referral or at the very least talk to our DR Kim. Wishing you all the best and know that you are not alone. Best Wishes Nikkir x

Hi.max here.i have had very severe anxiety.but not since i tried something .animals either attack or run away when it happens. So.i tried running hard when ever i had a bad anxiety attack.even up a hill.the trick was.the attack soon subsided while running hard.it also felt good after awhile.till it never came back.i still have depression.but not bad anxiety attacks anymore. But i would get a doctors advice first and do a stress test at a good gymnasium trainer. Before trying it.as it can be very stressful on your heart. Maybe wild animals have more answers than we realize. Cheers. Max

Hi Tazza261,

Firstly, welcome to the forums.

Anxiety has many symptoms which vary from people to people, shortness of breath is one I have dealt with in the past, purely because when I get very overwhelmed and panic, my chest just tightens, it doesn't help that I have asthma either. As Nikkir said, I would most definitely be going to your GP to discuss this issue but because not being able to breath is a big problem and one that should be addressed.

My best for you,

Jay

Hi Tazzar.

As advised by Nikkir, is it worth you paying a visit to the GP to have an overall check-up. Feel free to open up to him/her as this might uncover something less traumatic or more simple in the way of treatment or cause that you have not been aware of. Also, seeking help from BB Dr Kim could be good alternative or extra step.

Do you do any relaxation or meditation or yoga? I find sometimes that helps with anxiety.

Hi

it happens to me. It's been 6 months since I had panick attacks so bad I was hyperventilating but for months now on and off I've had tightness and pressure in my chest. My psychologist said it's anxiety but I've been wondering lately if that's all.
