How do you get better?

Hi,

Does anyone ever get sick of health professionals constantly throwing CBT in your face when you have anxiety/depression? I know it works for most people, but it doesn't work for me. I keep trying to tell the people around me that it doesn't work but they always just give you another mindfulness activity to do, and it's this whole waiting game. I feel like a ticking time bomb. I've looked for other alternatives but it's a whole lot of telling your story and waiting, and I don't know how much longer I can wait. If anyone is in the same boat I'd like to hear how other people are dealing with this? Right now I'm really struggling. Thanks.

hi,

obviously i know nothing about you or your struggle but i found that CBT doesn’t work for me either, maybe because of my preconcieved notion that it won’t work but either way, not working. i am trying very hard to get better and i am using a mood tracking app where everyday i write how i feel and why i feel this way, it has helped me to understand my depression and anxiety much better and with that how to deal with it better.

you should give it a go.

the app i use is called australian unity resilience or something like that and the app pic is white and has a big RP on it. it’s free.

hope it helps 🙂

CBT doesn't work for me either. I have tried it multiple times and yeah, nothing. Nice to find some alternatives on here, I definitely have to give that app a go. I'm honestly still at the stage where I don't really know how to get better but I have a bunch of stuff that doesn't work haha. I typically throw myself into a hobby or something just to keep my mind occupied but its working less and less lately.

I have seen 3 different psychologists in my life. The very first one I saw relies largely on CBT. To some extent, I found it helpful, but I dislike being questioned and challenged by her constantly. The second psychologist I saw pretty much talked to me like a friend. I encountered issues with my supervisor at the time. I hardly recalled any instances she used CBT. She asked me to think of something positive about my supervisor, e.g. Unlike many supervisors, she is willing to help with my personal development. She explained that when we think of others in a positive way, we tend to interact them positively. That has dramatically improved my relationship with my supervisor. I like her way of counselling and saw her for 4 years. I switched to another psychologist recently. She is more or less the same as my second psychologist, i.e. talking to me like a friend. I told her what I got from my previous 2 psychologists, and she tells me that CBT is not the only approach for anxiety. What I suggest is that you let your psychologist knows that CBT has not been of much help. Sometimes, it takes time to find the right strategy for you. For me personally, tackling stressors in life (e.g. supervisor) is way more helpful than CBT, mindfulness etc.
