Hi HTF,
Welcome to the Beyond Blue forums. It can be hard to understand these conditions, that's for sure. As everyone is different it is important if you are suffering to seek help from a GP so they can find the appropriate treatment.
Have you had a look at the depression and anxiety 'checklist' here on the home page? It's a good place to start.
There are definitely actions you can take to treat and prevent depression and self harm, make this the start of your journey to find out more and please look after yourself. If you are feeling low and you need some help you can ring the Beyond Blue phone service, it's free and 24/7.
Talk any time.

Hi HardToFeel and welcome to the BB forums!
You've definitely come to the right place to find information regarding depression and self harm. What I firstly suggest is having a read of the info under 'The facts' tab - BeyondBlue has some fantastic resources about depression and self harm, what you can do to help someone suffering, and the different treatments. Look under the 'Resources' tab for more information, and BB even offer the option of sending out the information to you in the mail for free.
If it is yourself who is going through this, I urge you to call the BeyondBlue hotline, and seek professional help; take a trip to your local GP and they'll be able to find the root of your problem and refer you to an appropriate psychologist or therapist.
Wishing you all the best!
Crystal

Haiii, HardToFeel.
Mental illnesses can be confusing but this website and community are here to help.
If you look up near the tabs, you will notice that there are 4 tab thingies. You can look at them and they will contain more information on topics you are confused about.
If you're the one who is feeling down and/or feel like you are going through a mental illness, please seek help. There are lots of lovely people who can help you and if you don't want to talk to someone you know, there are emergency services such as KidsHelpline or even this website which has people you can talk to. If you think it is serious then please seek professional help from a counselor who will be able to refer to a psychologist.
I may only be new here but I am willing to help ASAP.
🙂

Hi HardToFeel,
Welcome to the BeyondBlue forum. Depression & Self Harm are probably not things anyone can explain in one go because they're so specific to the person suffering but a few places to start are:
- I’d definitely recommend going to a GP or psychologist because they will be able to answer a lot of your questions whether it's you or someone you know suffering.
- On the BB homepage there are 3 circles “learn about anxiety”, “learn about depression” and “take a 1 minute checklist”. It would be a good idea to go through and read about depression and do the one minute checklist. In the 'learn about depression' button there is a specific tab about self harm so have a look at that
- If you have specific questions or want to chat about what you’ve read you can post on the forum again someone should be able to give you their thoughts.
If you are having trouble coping or you’re not sure how to help someone else always feel like you can contact the BeyondBlue phone line or Life Line.
Don’t forget that you can always reach out to someone on the forum as well because there will always be someone here who understands and wants to help you.
