ADHD, 17, Getting first Job

Hi, I'm almost 18 and I live out of the main city meaning that to be able to get anywhere I need to drive and the first problem there is I don't have a car, the second is I don't have enough money to buy a car.

Ive been looking for a job for a year now but I can't seem to find one because my Availability isn't what most employers want, because of school and at this point I can only work when my parents can get me there.

I also am afraid to work as this will be my first job and I'm afraid I'll do something wrong and Be fired. My anxiety has made me think of every little thing I could do wrong especially because I have ADHD so I can pay attention to much unless I enjoy it, and if I don't I won't work to my best ability.

Hello Whatevenrobin

My humble apologies for the very late response....seriously...

Welcome to the forums and good on you for posting too!

Please dont be afraid to work. It is very common to be afraid of our first job...I was too. I was nervous and apprehensive but that disappeared after a couple of days. It will for you too...thats for sure.

You are nearly 18 and will do well. For you to have the courage to post here shows a person that is determined and willing to do their best at whatever you apply yourself to.

I have been a manager (boss) for a long time and to have someone like yourself working for me would be a plus as you have a lot of strength.

Mistakes will happen for sure but your new boss (yes you will have one) will understand that you are new and will make allowances and let you learn and grow as an employee/staff member 🙂

If I may ask you...how far are you from the nearest town? Even if you are in a country area there would be someone looking for a hand on a farm/small factory/small supermarket even without experience for a few hours a week that your parents can help you travel to.

You are also completing your education which as you know is a priority over work. You have a lot of 'drive'...I dont see any doubt in you succeeding with any job you apply yourself to.

You will get a car...Yes this is a frustrating time...even with the ADHD you will do well...

Do you have any type of work that would interest you?

I do hope you can post back and let us know how you are going.....There are many kind people on the forums that can be here for you 🙂

My Best

Paul

Hi Paul

thanks for the kind words.

I live 30-45 minutes away (which doesn't seem like far, but it builds up, when you have to get in and out many times in one day). All the jobs I have applied for have said that I needed experience, I would do work experience but with my limited time it's hard.

I don't know where I would like to work, preferably not a fast food place, but I have applied to many of those anyway.

My parents said that they would like me to work but if I can't get one they will try to help in anyway possible.

Thank you so much for replying, I was worried no one would.
