OCD and ASD

Hi

Anyone know anyone with OCD and ASD?

My 14 yo son has both, and is non responsive to CBT and ERP.

He is on high dose SSRI's, and an antipsychotic medication and was going along well.

But recently, the wheels have fallen off, and he is having extremely long episodes (ie. >24hours) .

He has stopped engaging in activities of daily living at present including going to school.

Whilst he is not having episodes, I can get him to eat and take meds.

Has anyone been down this road before and got any ideas that would help?

Our local Child Youth and Mental Health Service (CYMHS) is struggling with him.

hello and welcome

i apologise you havent had any responses as yet. i dont have any experiences in this area but i hope others have and will post their experiences.

have you perhaps looked into other forms of therapy? im not sure what might help but theres ACT, Schema therapy, Dialectable Behaviour therapy, Psychotherapy, ECT (but i would be using that as a very last resort)

Hi dazzlingdazzler,

This sounds very stressful for you, and no doubt, your son too. A 24 hour episode would be very emotionally and physically draining. I feel for you as you must be feeling so tired and worried...

I’m glad Startingnew has kindly replied with some wonderful suggestions. I’m not an expert when it comes to OCD or ASD but I have some understanding of ASD.

When I was growing up, some of my family friends had (have) children with ASD. While it was obvious that they loved their children very much, they also faced some unique challenges too...

I was thinking you might like to try giving the Disability Intake and Response Service line a call. It’s operated by the Department of Health and Human Services and is Victoria based. Even if you’re not in Victoria, I would still suggest giving them a call as they should know support services for other states as well. Just let them know which state you’re in...

You should be able to find the number by googling “disability intake and response service.”

I would also suggest looking up the Raising Children Network online. It’s an Australian parenting website that is supported by the Australian Government Dept of Social Services. Once you’re there, try typing “Interventions for older children with Autism spectrum disorder” for a range of interventions for teenagers.

Hopefully those suggestions are helpful though I understand it’s highly possible that you’ve already explored those services. But I thought that I would suggest them anyway just in case...

If you’re feeling up to it, let us know how things are going with you and your son. Some people find it helpful to vent, chat, ask questions, etc, which you’re most welcome to do. You can write whenever you like...

Kind and caring thoughts,

Pepper
