Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and I am hoping to connect with people struggling with anxiety and depression like myself. I am 51 and have suffered depression for about 15 years, I have the depression under control as I take anti-depressants but the last 12 months anxiety has reared it's ugly head. I did not know what was wrong with me so I headed off to the doctor complaining of constant nausea, upset stomach and just horrible feelings of dread. So diagnosed with anxiety as well as depression I did some homework. I am not actually sure what my triggers are, sometimes it just hits me out of the blue. I am an overthinker and it drives me insane! I have tried meditation, mindfullness, listening to calming music, colouring in and many many other things. My doctor prescribed me medication only for when I really need it to take the edge off. I try my hardest not to rely on the medication and try to fight through the anxiety but some days it just becomes all too much. I have explained to my employer what I have been diagnosed with and they have been fantastic! My husband and my daughter are my go to's when I really need to talk and without their understanding and trying to help I would be lost. I am so glad that I have found this forum and feel like I am not alone on this horrible journey. I would love to hear what you guys do to help with your anxiety and depression? I am off to my doctor this afternoon for a check in and thinking I might go and finally talk to a professional about it. Has anyone on this forum gone and spoken to a psych of any sort and if you have did you find it beneficial? Any comments would be appreciated.
Michelle xx

Hi Michelle and warm welcome to our community forums
Yes, it is very good you've found your way here. The symptoms of anxiety abound. I'm still finding out that some of those little niggly things I've put up with for years are associated with anxiety (e.g. nausea, upset tummy).
You've asked some very good questions about what to do and how to manage yourself when it hits. All those things you mentioned are great - mindfulness, calming music, colouring in. They help a little, though there are so many different things you can do. It's having a kit bag and getting out the latest tool.
It doesn't mean my anxiety has gone away. It means I am able to manage it. I've grown accustomed to the thought it is here to keep me company for the remainder of my life. It's learning to move on with this knowledge.
I see a psychologist and have done for the past 20 years on and off. My first ever visit was when I started having recollections of an early childhood trauma. I've found it is useful as it has helped me tremendously to understand myself. How I've come to be where I am. While I've had others to talk to, talking with a psych has always been a little different - I open up more, I say things that I wouldn't easily say to someone close. Especially those things that aren't very nice to talk about. Fear of fear is the worst for me.
Over the 20 years there have been at least 3 psychs who are outstanding and given me many tools to put in my kit bag. There are many different techniques to use for managing anxiety when it rises. I really like your idea of seeing a psychologist. Is there anything stopping you from doing so?
Also, have you had a look at the Anxiety forum yet? When you feel up to it, why not have a browse through that forum? There is a good thread on - self help tips for managing anxiety.
You're not alone Michelle. Feel free to join discussions that you think relate to your situation.
Kind regards
PamelaR

Hi Michelle,
Thanks for posting and sharing your story. There are certianly different viewpoints around taking medication for anxiety and depression, but we have to remember that we're all different, and different things help us make our life what we want it to be. In my opinion, just try to do what works for you, and don't feel guilty or bad if someone else thinks that wouldn't work for them! We judge ourselves and others too quickly 🙂
Regarding speaking to a psychologist, I can't recommend it enough! It has helped me numerous times when I've been in particularly anxious phases, and I consider it just a part of general life maintenence. I've always felt that if we go to the doctor or dentist for a check-up, when nothing is wrong, why not treat our mind (which is a million times more complicated) to a little TLC every now and then!
Something else I love about seeing a psychologist is the removal of the listening burden on family and friends. Now, don't get me wrong, family and friends are great supports which can help you through an awful lot, but I love the relief of being able to unload all of my thoughts and feelings to a psychologist or counsellor, and lift that listening burden off my wife. My wife is amazing and loves to listen when I need, but active listening is hard work for anyone, so it's nice to lift that burden every now and then.
Like PamelaR said, check out the anxiety forum if you feel up to it, but either way, thanks for posting and sharing your story.
Warm regards,
Jackson85

Hi Mitchy1967, thats great 😀.
See what your GP recommends, as you should be entitled to a few sessions per year with the medicare rebate. The most important thing is that you connect with your psychologist, so if you like them, great, but if you don't feel fully comfortable or it's just not a great fit, it can be worth finding another. Around 80% of the positive things that come from therapy have to do with your bond with the psychologist!
Feel free to post again anytime, I'll keep an eye on this thread.
Best of luck 😀

Hi Michelle
So pleased to hear you are going to make an appointment with a psychologist. Hope it all goes well for you. It may take a couple of visits before things start to settle.
Keep reaching out if and when you want to Michelle.
Kind regards
