Does anyone on this site been diagnosed or lead to believe at stages in their life that they were a skitzophrenic..I am eager to hear your story. Everything I can know about this mental health condition will be a help for me to understand my story and life...

Please tell me what skitzophrenia is in your own terms. It appears the condition is continually changing with experts . It has a lot a misunderstanding and un-explained phenomenon or maybe that is just with me?

Is that un-true to say?

i have tried to find connect groups with people living with skitzophrenia for obvious reasons . I hope people living with it will reply!

regards..

Jay

Hi Jay

I had a family member that had schizophrenia and it is a serious debilitating illness. Its chemically based that can be treated with the newer medications that are available and regular counseling combined.

It usually manifests from mid teens to mid twenties. Adult onset Schizophrenia is very rare but can occur.

Can I ask if you have been diagnosed with this illness? Its been around a long time and can be passed down in our genes or triggered by cannabis use if the faulty gene is present. (Cannabis induced Schizophrenia) Even with the faulty genetics Schizophrenia may also lay dormant without showing any symptoms.

Can also be triggered by long periods of chronic stress during childhood if the gene is present.

Google can be a wealth of information however the internet can also misinterpret this illness as there are so many opinions of it.

www.schizophrenia.com is a site that seems to be very trusted and dedicated to this awful illness.

The forums are a judgment free zone Jay. There are many gentle people that can be here for you, no worries 🙂

I hope some of this has been of help to you

my kind thoughts

Paul

Hi Jay,

Have you watched the movie "A Beautiful Mind"? It is about the Nobel Laureate, John Nash and a good one describing the illness.

I have a good friend and two relatives who have schizophrenia. It is true that this disease has a lot of misunderstanding in the general public and patients can be very lonely. For my good friend, I didn't know she has the disease until she opened up to me. It was very brave of her to do that, as many people would run away and we just knew each other at that time. Then she had a major episode when she would be talking, laughing and singing uncontrollably by herself on the bus and everyone was scared of her. My mum was on the same bus once and she warned me to stay clear of her. In the end, I decided to stay with her, as she must be very lonely fighting the illness. We then became good friends. I later learnt that she started having the illness when she studied abroad, so it was triggered by stress. After years of medication, she fully recovered and is living happily now.

My two relatives are not that fortunate. They are into and out of the hospital and still battling. They are on strong medication and the side effects are keeping them from enjoying life.

However, I need to stress that people with this illness can be cured or get better, so don't give up.

Hi Jasonw,

Thanks for posting again.  We have members with a wide variety of experience in different mental health conditions here on the forums, but the majority of people posting here have experiences that centre around anxiety and/or depression.

In the absence of getting some responses here, we can suggest having a look at the SANE forums, where there are a number of active threads on schizophrenia:

Hi Jay. We spoke yesterday on my thread about PTSD. So hello again.

I see that our moderator has directed you to another website where you hopefully will find others who are personally living with schizophrenia. I hope you will follow up on that, as obviously it is preferred that you receive advice from those who are personally dealing with it themselves.

I would just like to say however, that with proper treatment and medication, people with the disorder do lead a full and happy life.

My brother in law is a schizophrenic. He received appropriate treatment soon after diagnosis. It took some time, but they have now found the right meds and dosage for him. He now leads a very normal life.

I also had a friend and neighbour who had a 25 yo son who was diagnosed with schizophrenia. As opposed to my brother in law, this other young man refused to accept he had a problem and never sought appropriate help.

So from my limited experience, I believe it is very important that a proper diagnosis is made and that treatment is accepted. It can make the world of difference.

I hope you find the answers you are seeking Jay. In the meantime, please continue to post here, where I'm sure you will receive lots of more general support from other members.
